2004 Ford Mustang 3.9L V6 engines ideas
My mustang is a daily driving and will make a comeback into racing auto cross and I am catching the mod bug.
I am looking into building up the engine up to get a little added rwhp/rwtq (primarily around 230-250 rwhp N/A), don't want to do nothing too extreme, but the thought has contemplated it. My car is stock and automatic (4R70W), but I got: Pypes 409 True Dual Exhaust Kit X-Pipe w/Street Pro Mufflers Ford Racing 7.5 LSD Ford Racing Aluminum Driveshaft ready to be install once I get back from busines trip in May. My primary shop is Big Daddy Performance and JDM Engnieering, both located in New Jersey. So this is what I have in mind. The base horsepower of the 3.9L was rated by the dealership when I bought it brand new in 2004 as 193 hp at the crank, so I assume doing 160 rwhp at the wheel. So my assumptions is that with aluminin driveshaft and true dual exhaust installed I should see a slight increase of 168 to 170 hp at the wheel. (Feel free to correct me if I am wrong) My plan for my drivetrain/engine mod is: Super Six Motorsports Stage 3 PowerPaks adds up to 90 hp, probaly 70 rwhp with mods below: NGK Performance Spark Plugs K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake (no will not get one from Ebay) JBA Cat4ward Shorty Headers 4.10 Motive Gears with rear end and bearing installation kit Ford Racing Speedometer Recalibration tool all these install will be done all in once and dyno tuned at the end. I also been considering including forged internals in as well with the install. Super Six Motorsports offers Eagle forged I-beam rods, ARP rod bolts, Wiseco forged pistons, rings, pins, and lox 8.7:1 compression ratio only) for $1150 and a race prepped crankshaft for $900 should I install a Procharger in the future although I highly doubt it, but it good for having a strong engine. they are specficily tailored for our V6 engineor should I just skipped the forged internal/powerpaks and get a: 4.3l stroked shortblock and skip the powerpak? whats more cost effective & easy regarding the install/labor and won't kill my fuel in the in the long run between the 2? I run on 87 octane fuel, will I need to upgrade octane fuel on either the short block or powerpaks? Q&A I am also planning on buying a new Mustang in 2014 50th anniversay. Which is good for modding and autocrossing: 2013 BOSS 302 Mustang, Mustang GT or Ford Shelby GT500? Thanks in advance! |

i believe power pack comes with a cam.
BTW there was a completely forged 4.2 for 2000$ for sale, ESG may can get you a link to it. Put a custom cam in that, P&P Heads, lower intake, Windstar upper intake. as far as your to do list ... you need to do more research. NGK Performance Spark Plugs K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake (no will not get one from Ebay) JBA Cat4ward Shorty Headers 4.10 Motive Gears with rear end and bearing installation kit Ford Racing Speedometer Recalibration tool reagular plugs will work fine CAI useless, get a windstar kit if your gonna spend money, or buy a damn ebay one and save money on a sticker ... shorty headers are already on your car ... dont waste money on shiney ones with a name on it gear and bearings kit =) good job ! recal tool ... fail ... get a handheld tuner, especially with your auto ... fail if not .. to finish this post, you definately need to do more research on all this. Mod list at top of forum will help. As well as the search button and Google. |

thanks for your input guys.
about the spark plugs yeah I kinda figure that so I will cross that out my list. cold air intake (K&N), lol yeah I know. how much are the windstar going for today? ===================bump======================== good god $415.00 from VAP, hmm, I might! Isn't the recabribation tool to correct my speedometer for the (4.10gear which would throw it off by 10mph. I need my car operating with correct speed) , does a tuner does that also? in regards with tuning, the plan was to get it dyno tuned at the car shop that will work on my engine after install? I'll guess I'll talk to the guys at JDM Engnieering about this. the JBA headers, well since the engine is gonna be taken out of the car for the installation of the powerpak stage 2+ and the VAP Windstar now, I figure I throw in the headers in as well. How reliable are the stock manifolds? Ahhh I'll get the JBA for the hell of it After careful consideration I think I will just do: Super Six Motorsports Stage 2+ Powerpak VAP Windstar Kits Motive Performance 4.10 gears w/ rear end and bearing installation kit JBA Headers get it Dynoed Tuned by JDM and call it a day. hopefully this will get me between my rwhp 230 -250 goal. just wanna get over the 200 rwhp hump safely and reliable. these 3.8/3.9 engine are pretty strong, I don't understand why they underate these. the ford racing recalbration or tuner which will correct my speedo accuratley after I put my gears? thank you all! |

An SCT tuner works for all of your mods. You can also use it to recalibrate your speedo whenever you want. It's a lot more versatile than the speedo recal which is a rip off. You are also an Auto, that's a great combo right there.
Buy the Windstar like others said and cam it. You'll hit your goal.

alright an SCT tuner it is.
I decided to just do the SSM Stage 2+ PowerPak, along with K&N FIPK Cold Air Intake JBA Cat4ward Shorty Headers, 4.10 Motive Gears with rear end and bearing installation kit, SCT tuner that and with the Pypes 409 True Dual Exhaust (Street Pro Mufflers), tlok, and Alumnin driveshaft install, gett it dyno tuned, get my 230-250 rwhp (hopefully 250 at the wheel) and I am ready to autocross and ralley. I was considering the windstar, but I'll just get the K&N. The difference between both putting down rwhp makes no difference IMO it about breathing better, I would recommend the windstar thou, but then I got to get rid of the upper ported intake that comes with the powerpak which I paid (not gonna happen) my competition is really a bunch of civic with fart cans mufflers, and poorly modded import everyday cars you see, plus the driver are shitty racers (wanna be fast and the furious pot smokers). When it comes to Illegal night autocrossing in New York City or Autocross itself it all about a good driver/instinct, good suspenscion (already planned out), and a reliable engine. Either or the real money will go in my down payment for the 50th anniversary mustangs coming out in 2014. I considering either a GT, 302, GT500 whic would be a good platform out of the three for 1/4 mile, ET, and Auto-X. Which one should I get for auto-X ing |

I wouldnt count on 250 man lol
6stang99 never hit that, i think he got 238, with more than you got. Im looking at having 250 though 4.2 babyFYI other people port and polish heads and intakes .... dont have to pay that price. that K&N is no better than a ebay version ... dont waste that much money please .... If anything ill sell you mine from AM, its 70$ there, but i can make a deal with you since its used. but mine didnt have the 2nd sensor like other years do for the intake. So it might not work for you cause I plugged the shit outta that hole lol |

thanks you mustang mike.
as for the possiblity of me hittin over 230 at the wheel, I am cool with that, isn't that what a stock 2004 gt make at the wheel on automatic; it bhp is rated at 260). the K&N cai I will be getting for free cause my friend got it for his 2004 stang but he ended up traded in his sixxer to put the down payment for his 2012 302 boss. the k&N fipk kit is brand knew still in the box and he just gave it to me and made fun of me because he will be getting a boss 302 and I am stuck with my V6 3.9L, I feel bad for the boss because he can't drive worth of sh!t and he is getting under the seats of a Hi-Po car. Damn, well we'll see when the 2014's mustangs come out. I will be jumping ship and going with V8this time, but I will sure as hell keep my sixxer, it the symbol of my youth and it my baby I bought brand new when i came back from the war. too much history to give it up. the best I will do is beef it up and make it look cool performance good safely. lol, you thought i was gonna pay $259 dollar for better breathing sorry I should of mention it earlier. |
