oil leak? very annoying

ok soo i have been having a leak its not like Niagara falls but its steady probably like a drip every 20-30 minutes

i took a picture underneath to show where i think its leaking.

theres like a black rubber plug and that seems to be where oil is collecting and dripping.... i took it out and its just an empty cavity what is that for??

here is a picture of where it is actively dripping i got under there and witnessed it drop from this spot lol

Looks like an automatic transmission, cavity shouldn't be empty but have the torque converter in there. Look a little closer inside an you should see a large "donut" looking thing in there. The rubber plug just covers up the hole to allow access to the TQ converter drain plug; once its rotated around.

Is the fluid redish or black? If it's red it probably transmission fluid. If its blackish, then its probably the rear main seal on the engine block.

I love seeing serious tech threads here man. But you've got to remember that most people here are weekend mechanics and don't have a ton of mechanical experience. So threads that get past CAIs, exhaust, and little things that everyone does will get passed over by most people. Just gotta hold out for someone that knows their stuff

That being said, I would agree on it being the rear main seal. Difficulty shouldn't be too bad. Once you've got the transmission dropped you basically just need to remove the seal and put the new one in. I believe putting the new one in is one of the more difficult parts but a rubber mallet should make things a little easier.

all i really need to know is how to get to the seal, as i dont want to do unnecessary steps plus guides help u out and will let you know of possible things that could go wrong. its just a good idea

i mean a car with 160k ... it should be about time for things like this to be happening

Be careful not to damage the crankshaft seal surface. One way to get the seal out is to drill some small holes in the metal part of the seal and put sheet metal screws in and pry on them. Also put some oil or grease on the lip of the new seal before installing it.
