Service engine light! help.

Okay, so i bought my 2001 v6 6 months ago, with 105k miles. it now has 115k and is due for an oil change, driving home tonight, BOOM. service engine light. now, could this be because i need to change my oil? im going to, just not at midnight obviously. and there has always been a slight sound that i think to be is a tiny exhaust leak but i am unsure. anyways, anyone else had problems around this same mileage are or could possibly if and anything is actually wrong?

(my car runs perfectly, full power, nothing sputteres at all)
i really just hope this car isnt screwing me. but yeah, i have faith in my sixer.

my car does seem to have one problem, and i dont know if this is a misfiring problem and i need new spark plugs, but when i come to a stop the engine jolts after a complete stop, it could be the iac that i need to clean soon, but idk.

The easiest way for us to help you is for you to go to an autoparts store and have them pull the code for you. Don't buy anything they try to sell you, I've had some idiots try to help me before. Just bring us the code they give you and we should be able to get you a solution

Yeah, Autozone should pull the code for free. As far the gas smell, there's a gasket back there that commonly goes bad. I've never had an issue with mine so someone else is going to have to chime in on that.

the tank grommet is most likely the source of the gas smell like mcqueen said. the oil definately needs to be changed. might as well do spark plugs and wires being that the jolting is probably a intermittent misfire. or as you stated, very well could be a dirty IAC valve or MAF sensor

so i just got it checked out and the service light came on from the grommet by the filler cap like all you guys said was from the gas smell, yeah that made the light go off. so ill be swapping that. anyone know where to buy it? i know the dealer sells it. but i want to find somewhere thats cheaper possibly.

also with the jolting, i cant get my damn IAC off! the lower nut is somehow stripped and ive never even tinkered with it until now. must have been previous owner. its such a tight space i cant grind it down to have two edges to grab with a wrench. and a socket slips. any ideas??

ill also be making a write up and possibly video for this grommet thing since its a pretty common problem.

Check Latemodelrestoration or Rockauto for the gasket. For that IAC bolt, get a pair of vice grips and see if you can get them clamped down tight enough to get a grip on the bolt. Take that bolt to Home Depot (or a store like that) and pick up a new one so you don't have to worry about getting it back in there. Also, be careful with the IAC gasket when you get the bolts out. Mine crumbled into pieces when I took my IAC off for the first time

iac bolts also have a nasty tendency to snap the heads off. That happens you sir are fubared.

As for that gasket on the fuel neck I think the haynes repair manual has a write up in it.

I also strongly recommend you buying one of those, trust me that's the bible with these cars.

You noted a small exhaust leak, 9/10 times its from the passenger side manifold. The motors tend to run hotter on that side so the neck of the manifold breaks down faster, I don't know why it just does.

I hope you changed your oil before 10k miles... I change mine every 2.5k-3k but I also drive my car really rough and hard.

Spark plugs should be changed every 40-50k miles if not sooner. I change mine every ten oil changes just to be safe. I've personally never had an issue with the gasket in question but I think i remember seeing it in a haynes repair manual.

Good luck and let us know how it goes. :-)
