hot air warning

Ive seen alot of questions about CAI. This is very interesting, especially in boost applications... they say you lose 1psi for every 10 degrese in temperature.

No. Lose power by intaking hot air from the engine bay. That's why you want the CAI setup that locates the filter in the fender and not just one of those sheilded setups that still take most of the air from the engine bay.

Exactly. I have the FIPK K&N. I noticed months ago that the "BOX" or shroud inside got hot as hell and the filter itself got pretty warm. That tells me that its gulping warm engine air. The box does conceal it from most of the hot air but there are gaps at the bottom and side that let in engine air.

I used GFs sweet home made idea and modified it a bit to help my situation. I was losing noticable power when the engine got hot and have been looking for a cheap answer. I sealed the rest of that box off with metal tape to start. Then I just ran a hose from the where the fog lights would be in the bumper up through the fender to the intake. Yes, its crude as hell but it puts cool outside air on the filter. It doesnt RAM it but it does keep the box cool where the filter is sucking air.

I just went out and ran the shit out of it here and did not experience the powerloss I have been. In fact, when I pulled in the garage, I opened the hood an felt the filter. To my amazement, it was cool not hot like it had been.

+1

The effect is greater on FI motors. When I got my car dyno tuned it was 93* in the dyno room and I had my air filter sitting inside my engine bay. The result: 261whp/282wtq @ 5.4psi. A couple weeks ago I had the car on a dyno and with a outside temp of 72* I pulled 286whp/303wtq @ 7.5psi. This is with the air filter still in the engine bay, but shielded somewhat from heat. So yeah, get that filter out of the engine bay.

25 more HP just from air temp. That is crazy.

Cooler air is more dense..meaning it fills up more space in your engine..hot air is very thin..more air = better combustion..

thats why they have intercoolers and you wont lose PSI on a CAI because there is no boost over the atmospheric pressure which is something like 14.1 psi ain't it?

colder air has a higher volume of O2 because the molecules are denser. it don't "fill up more space in your engine" it has a higher O2 volume in the same amount of space in the combustion chamber. just wanted to clear that up for yah guys.

Sort of. Cooler air is denser because it can contain more air molecules. Your MAF senses this and adds more fuel to obtain the correct air/fuel for proper combustion. Cooler air also means the computer can run more spark.
