MustanG_guy17, did you remove it for weight reduction?

The fix a flat stuff and similar leaves a big mess that someone has to scrape off your wheel... the guy at your local tire shop wont like you for a while

MustanG_guy17 have you considered a smaller dry-cell battery, lighter driveshaft, removing or replacing the bumper beams?

I am also interested in weight reduction and it doesn't seem to be a very popular topic around here. Thats why I asked.

EDIT: for poor spelling

Do you lose some traction without the weight in the back? Burnouts and donuts are probably easier

I don't think the weight reduction from removing the spare will be that significant. Removing weight in front of the front axle and behind the rear improves handling and in theory saves gas (except your foot tends to become heavier :wink ).

I am not sure (mustang newbie) if anyone sells lighter weight bumper beams but you can probably remove 100lb just by replacing or removing those. The safety of your car might be affected tho.

Also, you can do the rotors (to reduce unsprung weight) and driveshaft, but these tend to be more expensive mods.

There are other benefits too. A CF driveshaft can allow you to increase your red line, supposedly improves vibrations, etc.

Don't remove the bumper beams if you get into a high enough speed wreck you very likely WILL DIE...... Keep it safe, the best idea would be lighter weight wheels, and all the standard stuff like rear seat delete and actually I would invest in a battery relocater instead of just i lighter battery.

ckthecerealkiller, the front bumper beam is rated to protect your radiator at crashes not exceeding 10mph or something similar (i can probably find you the exact speed). they will not protect you at 55+mph crash at all.

with that said, it is a personal choice that you have to make for yourself.

I'd rather keep as much metal as possible between me and the other car... at any speed.

when my wife got hit by "the crazy u-turn drunk" it was at about 20 mph. It put a hole in the bumper and bent the shit out of the fender and hood not to mention it popped a butt load of plastic push pins from the front end. My point is that that metal bumper didnt budge. There was NO major internal damage and my wife was ok. Had that bumper not been there, I know for certain there was enough energy at that low of a speed to blow that radiator, the fan and anything else up there. Your right, it may be preference and there's always someone willing to do something like that but I never would mess with that after what I experienced.

ja002gl, i am glad your wife is ok.

now consider side impact. if what ckthecerealkiller is saying was correct you would not stand a chance at side impact.

so i would not go as far as saying your death is guaranteed.

the beams are better then 10mph...every little bit helps...thats a pretty big piece of metal to only hold 10mph worth of impact

Messing with the bumpers turns your car into a coffin. The bumper's primary job is to distribute large amounts of collision energy around the occupant through the subframe. As the energy travels from to back it's absorbed by designed weakness along the way. Without that design, a frontal collision could find the engine compartment in the backseat. From what I've read on the net, 100lbs of weight removal yields between .07-.1 second 1/4 mile time decrease.
