8.8" rear end question

can i get an 8.8" rear axle from any year mustang? or does it need to be from the same generation as mine?

any rear end will work, including the IRS from the cobras, thu i dont recommend the IRS but for your question yea your good

they all bolt on with no problem at all thu, but if you can of course get one from your gen

I wouldn't say no problem. Yes, they can all bolt on, but different generations are different lengths. Best bet it is to get it from your gen.

If you get one from a fox you'll need to get 5 lug axles and two 1/2 inch wheel spacers and thats about it.

you know how much work that would be

yea ANYTHING can work with soem fabricating...
an IRS system works different and there'd have to be work done under the 6er to make it work

your generation 8.8 is better
and believe it or not the 98 and 99 8.8 rear ends do differ slightly

the 98-96 8.8 rear ends are shorter then the 8.8 rear ends on a 99-04

Anyone know where to look for complete setups for buying. I look through 5.0 resto and all the rear ends they have don't fit 99 to 04's. Where could I possibly look to find an 8.8 with the specified gears I want. I heard there is a company that will make an 8.8 for you with the gears you want as well.

The 5.0 rears will fit u just have to do some modifying...like buying 5 lug axles and 1/2 in. wheels spacers.

i went to my salvage yrd..and he found an 03 cobra that has 35000 miles on it and he wanted 1500 for it!! i also said i didnt want a cobra..i wanted a GT and he said he didnt have one...why is hte cobra so much more than what i want to pay....would it be reasonable to pay 500 for an axle???

this is exactly why i started the whole thread to know if this axle would fit on my car... it doesn't give a specific year besides 79-04 (very specific indeed).

... for anyone with a 05+ V6 looking for an 8.8 rear axle ^^^ there ya go. It already has traction-lok and i think it would be pretty easy to swap the gears on your own with the axle completely off the car, so I found this walk through too...

The 03 Cobra's rear axle assembly is the IRS (Independent Rear Suspension). To use it you'll need the whole rear sub structure, brakes, LCAs, UCAs, halfshafts, rear stab bar, Cobra catback, and a few other odds and ends. You can usually buy a whole used assembly for $800-$1k from a Cobra owner on SVTperf.com that wants to switch to a stick axle.

I paid $650 for an 8.8 with ~20K miles on it. That's about a low to average price in this area. But the one I bought didn't come from a wreck, so I think I got a good deal. Axles from wrecks can have problems so it's a good idea to see the car it came from.

Well i'm going to rebuild it anyways but what should i look for on the cars that are wrecked to see if the axles will be messed up?
