Question:So who hates overdrive gear besides me? RPM increases 700 with overdrive off

So when I turn off overdrive while on the highway my RPM increases by 700 or so and and it start to feel faster and have better acceleration and runs faster and my exhaust roar louder..

So I'm thinking why have overdrive? I wish it was a way to tun it off for good..

Is it safe to turn it off while on the highway? I would love if it were off for good.

why do we even have overdrive on our car?

Overdrive is our 4th gear, it engages so we use less gas while cruising on the highway pretty much, when you turn it off all it's doing is downshifting into 3rd. I've done my fair share of playing around with overdrive. I did one run at the track "manually" shifting my auto. Just put it in first with overdrive off, went to 2nd, then drive, when the time came to go into 4th(overdrive) I just hit the button.

In no way is manually shifting an auto a good idea, we can't shift these cars better than the computer. Thats why it's highly recommended to the auto guys to grab a tuner. The 4r70w is really easy to tune/mod from what I have read. When I did my little manual shifting experiment I physically shifted a second or two earlier than I wanted to actually have it shift because it takes that second or two for the computer to register.

So yea I rambled a bit when I should have just said let overdrive do it's thing for the sake of gas mileage. But if you want google information on the 4r70w it's really quite the strong transmission. It does have a couple weak points though.

What a freaking fail ....
Dude
Its your last gear. Think of it as a 4 speed manual. to get the best mpg you drive in the highest gear for say. Taking off O/D puts it into 3rd gear. So you down shift which increases rpm which means more exhaust gasses coming out. Which means more power being made. Drive through town with it in 2nd or 1st. Same thing. Might as well do that, 30mph in first gear and tap the gas pedal and you'll def feel some acceleration ...

Now, if your gonna do that, I would get to buying 4rw70s left and right cause you'll be burning through them ...

If your cruising on the Highway an your in 4th (o/d) and floor it, and it jumps up like 1000 rpm, thats the computer putting the transmission into 3rd by itself ... same as turning overdrive off.

Their is a reason it is called "automatic", its for you to not fuck with changing gears and let it do what it needs to do.

And why cant you have lower gears ? You can. Go to that link, buy, drive to shop, have installed, few hours later, go pay and drive home. Btw it changes your speedo so get a tuner or recal .....

Lower gears will put you at higher rpm like that w/o burning up your tranny ( tranny as in transmission, not chick with a dick...)

Points made, search button and google from here out.
End thread, goodnight

If i typed bad, sorry, im fucked up ...

Yes it is, I managed w/ a STOCK V6 to blow my spider gears before I broke the tranny doing a neutral drop before I had common sense and acted like a dumb ass....

Epic face palm....if. u for some un godly reason are towing somthing with your stang and ur at a dead stop you put it in low 1 or "1" then yes you would then push it up into "2" if ur towing or going up hill with a lot of weight then you mess with ur shifter then you leave it alone....

You remind me of a guy who drives an 08 cobalt and fellls the need to shift the auto like its a stick and he actually will let off the gas shift then slam it and repeat he has gone threw a trans mission thus far...stop messing with you auto like its a stick and leave it in od or 4th

Your gears are as followed
1,2,3, o/d
Or
1,2,3,4
Same thing

Actually your car doesn't run crapy with o/d on the only way it will run crapy is if your in o/d and your doing about 45 all the stangs I've driven and rode in doing 45ish in 4th will feel like its bogging if you notice when your in 4th doing about 45 your rpms are like 1200ish mabey 1300ish...to me I always kept od off till I hit 50 then I turned it back on and nvr toched it lol

This thread gave me a goooood laugh sorry lol

sell your car and buy a manual if you want to shift,

i'm sure my tuned auto shifts better than you manually shifting an auto.

if you like o/d off, then leave it off. not hard to hit the button every time you take it out of park, make it a habit to do both at once, but you're only decreasing the life of your engine and increasing potential for problems.

I will say after running a 5 speed v6 last night, with exhaust, intake, and a tuner.
5 speed rapes a stock auto. granted im still running a bit rich cuz my car is gay and throwing a lean code and dumping fuel. But I got spanked cuz of how slow my car takes to shift and how long my gears are.

The only reason to do this is to use engine braking. And I think the thread has been answered pretty well, people who like getting good gas mileage like overdrive. If you want to accelerate quickly your car should downshift when you step on it anyways....
