K&N CAI Dyno Results
read up all you naysayers, and try to focus on the first of 2 graphs at the bottom of the page. hmmm seemed like that K&N fipk picked up 8 hp to the wheels, more than k&n claimed.

Please avoid provocative titles unless you want a flame fest (in which case I'll simply lock the thread and leave it at that because you were asking for it).
As for the topic at hand, I'm going to bet they ran the advanced timing as well as the CAI together. Show me a dyno of just the CAI, no addition of nitrous and advanced timing, then I'll believe it. If K&N was that awesome, I would have simply dropped a K&N filter into my stock intake because it pulls air from the exact same place.

Much as I am a fan of K&N filters, I gotta say the dyno results are not convincing. In the first runs the car is hitting about 13.2 AFR at WOT maybe a bit higher.
In the second run the AFR is set much lower which could only be the result of changes to the tune. From experience, 13.2 AFR was not ideal in my car. Dropping to 13 AFR (according to AEM UEGO placed before the cats on driver's side) increased HP by as much as what is shown in this "test". I do believe K&N filters flow better than paper ones but this experiment was poorly designed most likely for marketing purposes. As far as the FIPK system goes, I do not feel this is a good solution for controlling intake temperatures. The best place to get cold air is from the fender. K&N's "heat baffle" may look impressive but it cannot seal out engine heat in that location. A cold air intake helps off the line, especially in heavy traffic when underhood temps get really high. In real world driving, it pays to get the air from the fender. On a dyno with sufficient cool down time, there would be no evidence of weakness in intake air temperature control of the FIPK. Once you get stuck in rush hour, the FIPK might actually make less power than the stock intake. I recommend an in fender CAI and then get the car tuned with a wideband before the cats. You'll see more than 8hp over the stock tune which appears to me to be too lean at WOT. Thanks!

Who said photo shopped, have you ever been to a dyno?? You can do tons of things to "alter" results.

I think that the bigger issue is that with a CAI, it pretty much has to come off for any type of modding other than a NA build with a cut n weld upper.
I dont see the point of buying one now (yes i bought one first too) for how little they gain, even if it is 8hp. Now with the windstar you get around 8 hp or so and it has potential for boost, plus it looks a lot better. |
