Underdrive pulley?

I know this has probably been brought up 100 thousand times by Unknowing noobies like me, But...

What, And How does an underdrive pulley add Power?

Also, Here's a sound clip.

how do they work you ask....well basically they free up hp caused by parasitic drag...granted its not a lot of hp in our cars (i think a full set of UDP net you around 8-10hp)

as for the sound clip...i guessed right the other day...sounds like someone just cut the cats off the factory exhaust...time for a custom setup XD

well their either gutted or the mufflers been removed...somethings missing that should be there because it's to high pitched right now for having it all. didn't you say something was taken out and looked like tubing was welded in on your exhuast? i know it still has the single tip

8-10hp sounds pretty generous, unless they're very extreme UDP's, but I could be wrong. I just take a lot of those hp claims with a grain of salt, like the CAI's that claim to give you 20hp.

thats not claims from a vendor..that's the average my friend Kyle saw on his v6 with full UDP on a mobile dyno after adding them. our local stang club has a company that sponsors us that has one so we get cheap runs so alot of guys like to re-run after a bolt on or two

remember i said full UDP set...not just a single pulley. that's where alot people get confused

I was aware of the difference, I had typically seen only a couple hp from the single pulley, and closer to 5-6hp from the full set. I suppose 8-10 is possible, especially if it was one hell of a reduction. Not calling bs, but I'd guess that guy is one of the outliers of that data set.

I was generalizing. Oddly enough it seems fairly consistent between engine models, and yes I was thinking more in terms of V6's.

There always seems to be a factory freak though.

draw backs....audio and lighting can be an issue depending on the pulley

Bigger alternator is better than an overdrive pulley. Lots of Cobra guys run into this problem when they try to up the boost on their blower, and inadvertantly spin the shit out of their alternator and burn it out. Think about your alternator like a blower, and amps like boost. Sure you could run a smaller pulley and get more, but you're more likely to destroy something than if you just get a larger blower/alternator with a regular pulley.

that makes sense lol. yea because my dad got an alternator from autozone for his escort and it had the wrong pulley on it and it burned out the alternator in like a year.
