flames out the exhaust

So Ive seen in some of these stupid movies scenes where the car will suddenly start "throwing flames" out the back end. I always thought it was just special effects stuff to make things more exciting.

Ive been told that an increase in exhaust and header temperatures can help with power on a normaly aspirated engine. From what I understand, it helps the exhaust air move out of the engine faster.

What Im Asking is, is the flame thing real? Is there some system that burns something in the ends of the exhaust that creates a better flow out of the engine?

yes it's real.

yes it's illegal

it's just a spark plug drilled into the exhaust and some wires.

a spark plug? Does it ignite the exhuast gas? It sounds crazy! There's something flammable coming out the exhaust?

yea thats pretty much what it does.

your exhaust always has a little unburnt fuel in it.

i'll see if i can find a link

Cool. By the way, I like your sig. I love that random funny shit. Thats the guy from "300" isnt it? They look like terrorists doing aerobics er something... thats too funny!

Anyway, if its just a spark plug, thats a pretty cheap thing to do. Does it add to your horsepower with any notice?

yeah gas fumes are some of the most volital(sp?) part of gas, but it does nothing for performance. and it will burn up your exhaust

Rotaries don't need no spark plug in the exhaust to shoot some nice fireballs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_RMNia4lC8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJDiFOfwr3w

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9y718vSnZ8

Just for an example. What really happens is that at a high rpm when you let off the throttle the vacuum is high and ignition is cut leaving all this left over fuel which goes right of the exhaust. And since rotaries don't have valves or anything to get in the way all that fuel hits the hot exhaust.

AUTOloc.com... or what ever they make kits for single and dual exhaust set ups... what it does is kills the spark to the engine so more fuel can acctually get to the tips... of course this is horrible on the cats and mufflers... but yea the pretty much all it is... with a spark plug out the back

no no no, you push raw fuel through your engine and the spark ignights it. bad idea you end up with fuel in your oil. but you can hook up a little propain torch. and thats not a joke.
