Manifold volume in liters: stock vs Windstar?

What is the difference in internal volume between stock 3.8 and Windstar upper intake manifolds?

My car's stock tune file lists manifold volume as 6.5L. At a glance, the stock intake appears to have significantly less internal volume than a Windstar which is now installed.

Does anybody know how much? Care to guess?

In SCT Advantage III, manifold volume appears to be one of few controls for accelerator pump behavior.

Thanks!

I have considered checking the volume on these myself. I have one of each in my garage,I may check it out this week. But i can tell you for sure the windstar diffently out performed my ported OE manifold

well to really port a OE upper, you have to have it cut open, to fully be able to port the full length of the runners ... I mean, porting the runners as far as you can would be like putting the snorkel end of our stock intake and putting it on a cobra .... no matter how big the rest of the runners are, you still gotta feed it from that little hole at the end ...

Thanks Blue!

I agree the Windstar is one of the most noticeable mods you can do to a 3.8L. The first time you go past 3K rpms with it installed you'll be grinning!

The only trouble I've found is that the car leans a bit off the line. You can overcome it with a launch over 1500 rpms but in daily driving, I find it could be smoother. Tested changing this to 7L and it seemed to help, but I have not data logged it yet. The off the line lean out is really obvious on the wideband.

I'm still wrapping my noggin around what adds up to 6.5L intake volume in the first place. I think this includes the total volume of lower, uppper, intake tubing and the part of the MAF after the hot wire. It is like the "dead volume" between the MAF sensor and the intake valves.

Does that seem right?

It was a double post, so let's make it worth it. (Edited)

Walt,

It was not easy deciding to put so much of the budget into a LiveWire and get Advantage too. Then it became clear a wideband was also required. I can't say tuning is for everyone, but it instantly became my favorite hobby. No matter how much a day sucks, screwing around with the tune and then seeing the effect on how the car runs always makes me smile.

You'd be surprised how much better you can do than the "one size fits all" tunes they sell out there. I'm sure it is not for everyone. If you love to tinker with things when you're bored, I'd say signs are good this is for you.

Just so the thread comes to a conclusion, I tried manifold vacuum settings from 7L down to 4L. I like 4.75L the best and it shows the least lean out under WOT and least over rich going back to closed loop after WOT.

Conclusion: Windstar setup has less manifold volume than stock Mustang 3.8L intake
