if the heat was blowing cold then not enough coolant is getting to the core. since u drained all the coolant out make sure that u dont have an air bubble somewhere in the system. i believe(and someone can correct me on this) there is a bleeder screw on top of the thermostat housing. a trapped air bubble can cause overheating.

In order to get your air bubbles out, you can take the cap off of the Coolant Overflow tube and turn your car on. While your car is running, squeeze your upper radior hose to force the air bubbles out. This can be a lenghty process but you'll know that you don't have any air bubbles in the system.
