wheel extensions?

On my 96 v6 with stock wheels, it appears that I could move the wheels about 6 inches out and still they'd be under the fenders. Is that because I need to get new wheels that are 6 inches wider, or is there an extension kit or something? I'm not sure what it's called... there was one for the 300zx that you could add a widebody kit and then move the wheels out and get a lot wider track... but that was in England. does anyone do that to their stang? And, on the subject of wheels... good looking rims and tires are going to cost me upwards of a grand, aren't they? Any good ideas for budget shopping?

I've seen widebody kits for 300zx's and supras

normally they have something like a 19x22" wheel or something crazy in the rear.

Get some 18x10's or 18x10.5s in the rear with a 285 - 315 tire [i don't know whats the limit on the pre 99's so somebody else might chime in]
