Thermostat

Hi all. I am fairly new here and just bought a 96 v6. Needless to say, the previous owners have done some stupid things to this car. The car is running hot so I am doing the basic maintenance things to the cooling system. The question I have is this: does the spring on the thermostat face the radiator or the engine? I believe it is the engine but I am uncertain. When I took the old thermostat out it was facing the radiator so I wanted to check since I don't trust what has been done to the car in the past. Thanks for any help.

The spring should be facing in towards the block

How did they even install it with the spring facing towards the radiator? Also when you refill your coolant, make sure you get rid of all air bubbles in your lines. An Air bubble can get stuck around the thermostat and cause it to overheat.

Carney, what was the verdict on your overheating issues?

Cracked waterpump, faulty gasket when i replaced the pump, then air got into the system and i was running way way way low on coolant. All fixed and running good.

To OP, make sure your radiator is full of coolant before you run it. And to bleed the air out of the system, pop the cap on the coolant tank and open up the bleeder screw. Its the screw on the black metal line right above the water pump.

Glad you got it fixed dude.

And to piggy back on your post, Also make sure you squeeze your upper radiator hose to help push out the air bubbles.

Yeah I got the air bled from the system and everything seems to be working fine although it still runs hotter than I would like but when it's 108 outside I guess that's to be expected. When I bought the car there was paperwork showing where the previous owner had the water pump and hoses replaced. My guess is, that the dumbasses that replaced those components also replaced the thermostat and didn't pay attention to what they were doing.
