their is a possibility something could be off with the fly wheel or the clutch or the throw out bearing... your tranny could be going bad as well which would suck but if it does rip out a T56 out of a cobra or something...

take it in for a fluid change and see what they say when you do

This is getting complex. The original thought was that it could be a belt driven compnent. You have water pump, alternator, PS pump, AC compressor, and two idler pulleys all driven by that. I would think it would be OK to remove the serpentine belt and run the engine briefly to see if the noise goes away. This would rule out or confirm that it is a belt driven component. Just don't let it overheat!

If it is the trans I would think it would depend on what gear the trans is in. I'm not sure if this is a manual or automatic. Sometimes on manual trans there will be a noise in neutral that is less if the car is in gear.
