Port/Polish or Windstar

Hey guys,

Any idea on the the pros and cons when it comes to differences in benefits between porting and polishing the upper intake as opposed to installing the Windstar instead. I will be porting and polishing the lower intake and heads... still thinking/deciding on cam and phenolic spacer. I basically have my old engine complete so I can take my time and do a thought out build. TB, MAF, Injectors, Powder Coat/Chrome/Hight Temp Paint are also being considered. F/I thoughts may come after... not sure yet.

Thanks.

Adryan

I've recently switched back from Windstar to stock for smog tests. The car passed which is nice.

The Windstar has the edge over porting the upper intake only, but it is not a huge margin. Data logging with an SCT Livewire shows biggest difference is in the relationship between mass air flow and rpm between 2500 and 3200 rpm and again between 4000 and 4600 rpm. In these areas, the Windstar just moves more air showing load values 0.03 higher (0.83 peak load at about 3000 rpm and 4500 rpm for Windstar and 0.80 peak load at about 4200 rpm for stock intake). In fact, the ported stock actually scores higher peak MAF flow values. Too bad it is at 5900 rpm when the engine is topping out.

If you do a cam (higher rpm) and valve springs, a ported stock intake is probably fine. If you are going with the stock cam (lower rpm), the Windstar has an edge. Porting still beats unmolested enough to be more than worth the effort.

Enjoy!

Thanks Jetflo... so scientific with stats and all. It seems that depending on the application, the benefits are there but minimal in differences between the two. Would you recommend a larger TB and 24# injectors with the AM CAI and stock cams? I have moranoracing a few blocks away from work and he custom grinds cams and sells entire kits... with that I'm thinking that I will have enlarge air intake volume and fuel all throughout. (And he does recommend the appropriate internals for performance cams)

cams need pushrods usually. You probably wont know till its in the block. And valve springs/retainers. The ones comp cams recommends for their max street/strip cam is what you'll need.

Windstar is going to be your best option over a stock upper.

The stock upper to be properly ported to my knowledge has to be cut in half, inside must be ported all the way through. And welded back together. Or some shit like that.

If your going to buy a throttle body, just send me the money and I'll send you a sheet of paper that says "larger throttle body" tape it to the upper intake it will give you the same gains +/- 5rwhp. If you send another 20$ I'll sign it and it'll then give you +/- 12rwhp.**

Injectors + your mods also = waste of money

**doesn't count if your buying the windstar kit and doing the tb upgrade.

You mean this one?

COMP Cams: Xtreme Energy™, 273HR112 <BR> Max Strip & Street, Requires Spring

Then what roller rockers would you use, or does that not matter as much?
