It is called a camshaft position sensor synchronizer

It is as easy to remove and install as a distributor on older cars. That is because it adapts our old school 3.8Ls (designed for distributors) to distributorless ignition. People often call the synchronizer "a dizzy" for this reason.

The tool is a pain because it requires you to find top dead center for cylinder 1. As you know our 3.8Ls do not have timing marks so you have to pull the spark plugs, insert a clean screwdriver in #1 and turn the crank until you find the point where it rises highest. Then you can put the tool in the dizzy and bolt it in place.

2. You can take off just the sensor from the top of the dizzy and take a digital picture of the position of the "tooth" at the top of the dizzy's shaft. When you install the new synchronizer, all you have to do is adjust it so the pictures match.

I had exactly the same problem you describe and this fixed it. When you get the old synchronizer out I'm sure you will be surprised by how bad these bearings are when they start to squeak.

This. Right on top of Water pump. Will be replacing mine during my rebuild its been squeaking for awhile. It will stop for a few days then come back. If its squeaking at all I'd replace it. Pretty annoying and embarrassing!

No joke about being embarassing. I feel like I'm driving a jalopy. Squeak, exhaust leak, and power steering whine. Its been gone for 3 days lol. Hoping it won't come back for a little
