1st mustang and clueless
I just bought a 1997 v6 mustang and as far as i know it's pretty much stock other than some cosmetic stuff like tail lights and stuff. I dont really know anything about cars but I was wondering what would be some good mods to put into it that will get a little more horse power out of it. Or maybe just some things i should know about the car in general. Any information will be appreciated. thanks

well if you want something real cheap, look for a cold air intake on eBay, you can get one for 20-50 bucks, not too hard to install yourself. it won't give you a huge difference in power if it's your first mod though, but it is cheap.
To make a cold air intake more worthwhile, I'd say get your exhaust done, you can get true dual exhaust done for around 375 I believe, at any muffler shop. For another low priced mod, you could get underdrive pulleys, which would also require a new underdrive belt, you can probably get all that for around 100 bucks, apparently it's not too hard to install yourself but I've never done it so i wouldn't really know. next thing that comes to mind would be gears...new gears and t-lok. new gears will make your wheels spin faster, t-lok will make both wheels spin, rather than just one of them. You'd wana do them both at the same time since they're both installed at the same place, makes more cheaper labor in the long run. although keep in mind that with gears, you won't actually get more horsepower, but you will accelerate faster, which in turn will bring down your top speed marginally. I'm not sure how much that might cost you...300-400? not sure on that one though. also, regarding gears, if you drive a lot on the highway, I'd say go with 3.73 gears, but most guys on here stick to 4.10 gears so whatever floats your boat i guess...the higher the number, the more teeth in the gear, therefore the faster you'll go. but at the same time you'll get slightly lower gas mileage, maybe like 2-3 miles per gallon less. |

get the exhaust. Even if you dont get big gains, it will sound like a real car. It seems like all mods do better when your car is breathing better.

See whoever had it before me did something with the exhaust because the ends of it are different from the other mustangs of the same year that i've seen but im not really sure what. I've only had it a week. I'll post pictures soon and maybe you could tell me more about it.

v6 04 ford mustang
the 2 mods that you recommended to the other guy are the exact things i was looking into doing. if the car is stock car i just get the k&n cai and put that on without having to buy anything in addition for it to benefit? i'm picking up car knowledge as i go along. i don't wanna go out and get the cai home and once i have things apart find out that i should have known i needed to get something else to go along with it. also are there any sites that you recommend for inexpensive parts? thanks
