So I Need a New Water Pump.........
Anything particular I need to know? I have never changed one on these cars but it seems pretty straight forward. I have a 96 6er. Thanks.

RTV black silicone for gasket, a nice thin bead of that and let it sit a good while.
If its the same as my 04 then its super simple. Loosen the pulley bolts, take off belt, take off pulley. couple of bolts hold it on. Pull off. Scrape off gasket surface and clean it up. Apply RTV. put in place. Bolt down. Let RTV sit up awhile while you install the pulley back on. Put belt on. Tight pulley bolts. Go. Probably gonna need to drain the coolant a bit, but may not be worth screwing with, just make sure engine is cool (do it in the morning or something) and pull the water pump off, make a small mess, get over it, do the job, and refill the little bit of coolant you spilled lol. |

Why would you use RTV and just not buy the correct gasket ??

id be willing to bet the RTV would hold up longer, but RTV is pretty usefull stuff, always good to have a tube around.
but use whatever you want lol either will work. |

BTW OP, have you bought a new water pump yet ? If its the same as 94-04, the 4.2 water pump I have might work. Ill have to take a look at it and make sure its the same as my 04. That is if they used the same for all those years, idk ?

New Edges don't require a pulley remover, its held on by bolts. Not sure about the pre-99 SN95's.
There is a gasket but the manual also calls for silicone gasket maker to ensure a nice seal. Use both, maka no sense to do the job twice because of a leak. Mike hit most points otherwise. If you don't have a Haynes manual, get one. Edit: Take the time to make sure you get all the old gasket material removed. After a scraper for the main pieces, hit it with some 400grit to be sure. That's where I spent most of my time. Again, you don't want to have to do it twice because you rushed it or wern't thorough.

The pulley puller is to remove the PS pulley.
What I do is to remove the battery, then unbolt the bracket the PS pump and alternator are mounted to and set it where the battery was. The two bolts underneath are a bit hard to get to but it's doable. |

Stupid design of the bracket that attaches to the face of the water pump. You have to remove the PS pulley to remove it before getting the water pump out. I had forgotten, I've taken that pulley off 3 times now (none of which to remove the PS pump). I hate the way they designed it.

Correct. In order to remove the water pump you have to remove the stamped steel bracket between the PS pump and the water pump, which requires the removal of the PS pump pulley. Most people leave that bracket off without any ill effects.

Makes sense to leave it off... pita esp. if you have to go rent a pulley remover, as I'm sure most do.
