To gear or not to gear

Gotta 96 and tlok and installation kit already arrived. gears are on back order. now i'm reading i need a speedo gear 23 tooth to recalibrate my speedometer. i thought i could use my tuner to do that? my first gear is short enough as it is and these 3.73s will make it shorter. something tells me i won't be impressed with 3.73s as I'm thinkning. Maybe i should just tlok it and skip the gears. maybe its a sign that theyre back ordered, just wasn't meant to be. Thoughts/experiences?

1) Called Bama. They said there's no tune for differential gears for 94-98 v6s. Is he wrong I hope?

2) For those of you who have manuals and upgraded to 3.73s, do you really, in a sense lose first gear because of the rmps shooting up so quickly? Heard one guy say he takes off in second gear because his first gear is pretty much nonexistent. Didn't say what his gear ratio was though. Maybe 4.10s in a manual I could see that, but 3.73s in a manual?

3)Same friend said I'll be disappointed in the loss of top end speed and the only way to get it back is to install a better cam. Said cam would let bring my "first gear back" as well.

I'm auto, i will be getting 3.73 due to a frequent bit of highway mileage around here. its not everyday but i would guess every weekend day. all i have read tells me i wont be dissapointed with geared car.

No, for a 94-98, you WILL need to use a different speedo gear to correct the speedo/odometer.

Please put your year and model in your profile so that we know what car we're dealing with when you post a question.

94-98 cars use plastic gears in the speedo rather than the electronic speedo of the 99-04. So no, you can't use a tuner.

As far as gears, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Alright, then a speedo gear it is. Can someone please link me to a good place to buy one? I don't even know which one to get. I got a 1996 3.8L V6 (duh) and it's a manual. Tire size is stock if that even matters. Thanks Brostangs.

The dealership carries speedo gears. As far as which one you need, what transmission is in the car (I'm not familiar with what manual was offered on a '96 V6)? Also, what is the stock tire size? That does matter.

no more than 3.73.

4.10s on a singleport = very short gears.

4.10s are pretty short on a split port as well but they're fun as hell. I used to have to shift into 2nd before I could get through an intersection with my 4.10s.

Late Model Restoration is where I got mine. They have a page that will direct you to the right speedo gear (or gears, depending on trans) for whatever gears you're installing.

FWIW, I just recently had 3.73s installed. 1st isn't useless in competitive driving, but on the street you can pretty easily start in 2nd unless you're on a hill and if you're rolling a stop sign you certainly will want to stay in 2nd.

I really like it... 4.10s would've been too much, though. As it is I'm in 4th gear when I'm cruising around surface streets.

yeah i know there fun but think about this. a singleport makes peak power at 4k rpm. a splitport makes peak power a 5.25-5.5krpm. you can run a stock splitport to 6k before needing to shift. a singleport runs out of steam at 4.5k...even though redline is 5.1k.

i think he'll be alright with 3.73. its all my opinion but you can see my point
