Spare Tire
hey guys, i am planning on updating my audio system from 1 12 inch subwoofer to 2 12 in subwoofers but i want to take out the spare tire to help remove some of the weight in the trunk because it aparantly weighs about 20 lbs. the problem is though that when i take it out , it leaves an empty whole in the trunk and the trunk mat sinks when anything is on it. Do you guys have any ideas of what i could fill in the empty space that is really light weight but keeps the mat up? by the ways, it is a 2000 mustang convertible!
thanks guys! |

Weight reduction is where a lot of people make mistakes. Having some weight over the rear tires is actually a good thing because it will help the rear tires keep traction when you really romp on it. I recommend leaving the spare tire in there but if you're dead set on taking it out, you could get some styrofoam and cut it to fill the space.

I was thinking cardboard, but I'd leave the tire in personally.

Delete the whole audio system. All problems fixed.

Doesn't have to, just get a speaker grille to protect it. If you have one of those high excursion woofers make some type of elevated cover for it or something. Get creative

You can make a spare tire delete
I had a local shop called "Bob's Foam Factory" make a big foam hockey puck that fits snugly in the spare tire hole. The foam is black and very firm. The carpet sits nice and flat even with a trunk full of groceries. It saves weight. You just need to save at least that much from the front of the car as well. Perhaps moving the battery to the rear and spare tire delete? I'd get a AAA card if you're going spare-less

I took my tire out a long time ago, no idea where its at, had it in my moms shed when i lived there and when i moved out it disappeared. I like the idea of a sub in the wheel well though....i also like the idea of two subs in a rear seat delete....well see. want to do something like this soon.
