Running Rich?

So my I was starting my car yesterday and for a short while ( a few seconds) my exhaust was letting out black smoke. I knew that this could and should be just excess gas being burned off. but does this mean I'm running rich? i've heard that's what black smoke usually means. and after installing a dual exhaust, would a better air intake help with burning more fuel so there is not anymroe excess? and could my new exaust be the cause of the excess fuel?

those are the questions i'm having. thanks in advance to anybody.

You should be getting a code if its running rich. If I were you Id get a code read cuz you could have pending codes that dont light up the CEL. Also Id get a cai and a tune but thats just my 2 cents.

Either get a friend with a tuner, get a canned tune from bama or brenspeed and put it on the tuner or get a used tuner. Im looking to buy a tuner too but Ive been putting it off for some time now due to their price lol.

Just FYI, a tuner can only be used with a single vehicle. Once it's used to upload a tune, it's locked to that vehicle until the tune is removed. Don't worry about a tune for your car. NE's don't require a tune for exhaust or CAI. Now for the running rich problem, I would put my money on there being a problem with the MAF or an O2 sensor.

I got a tuner awhile back, best 300.00 bucks i spent on my car, it still helps out to this day and has basically paid for itself what with the diagnostic aspects and being able to turn off rear 02 sensors without having to buy MIL eliminators, it will save money for gearing as well.

well i've recently looked at my MAF and the previous owner had a new one put in. so my guess would be O2 sensors. why would that be the problem though? do those just go bad over time or can it have anything to do with my exhaust installation?

^^^ yes. until it becomes the restriction of the intake system, you are paying $200 for looks and a slight whistle on accelleration.

What CAI are you looking at at that price?

$75 you have the same thing. AM or Ebay. Agreed that there are minimal gains, but cleans up the engine bay, and a good starter mod to get working on your car if you do it yourself.

upwards of $200, LOL.

I bought my Diablosport for $25 shipped off Mach1Registry. Guy thought it was locked and didn't know how to check. I didn't want to buy a paperweight so we settled on this as a price. Best $25 I ever spent.
