99 mustang, cruise control causes car to rocket off

I have just recently had this happen to me a few times and it scares the S**T outta me esp the first time, ive been using the cruise control since i got the car a few months ago with no issues up untill now. What happens is i go to set my cruise control and the car starts taking off and hauling ass down the road like im flooring my gas pedal!!! The off button on my cruise control doesnt shut it off, and my brakes dont over ride the cruise control, the only thing that seems to stop it is if i turn my overdrive off, and then brake my car to a stop and turn it off, i was looking and i saw the 98- 99 mustangs had a recall on the cruise control but i called up the dealership and they said it didnt and not to believe everything i read on the internet.... So has anyone ever had this happen or know a way they can help me out before this ends up getting me killed!!! thanks guys

The problem is likely the cruise control cable. The plastic sheathing on the cable can split and cause the cable to stick. A temporary fix is to cut any loose plastic sheathing off but
the cable should be replaced. To stop the car turn off the ignition switch.

shouldn't be hard to replace...the cruise cable is cable on the left, has a little gray plastic connector on it
Someone can probably get a pic but I don't have any pics of my stock engine bay

This is a picture of the cables. The one with a red spring on it is the throttle cable. The smaller one on the outside is the cruise control cable.

Damn Toyota Mustangs!

Well, sounds to me it's not just the cable that is acting up. If the off button doesn't turn it off then there is a problem there too. But then again, it could just be the cruise control cable interfering with the the normal accelerator cable.

Look at the part of the cable that moves and see if the plastic coating on it is coming apart. From your picture it looks like that might be happening.

This is a common problem with Ford products. When the cable goes bad it sticks in the open throttle position. Switching off the cruise control doesn't make any difference since it's a mechanical problem with the throttle being stuck open.

I would hint toward the control module for the CC if the wheel controls aren't working...
