Oil Talk...Chime in

So I did a oil change with synthetic around June 2011, now I check my oil and the dip stick is bone dry. What gives?

I have no oil leaks. My car always ran smooth. So now I'm trying to figure out where did all my oil go?

I checked the oil right after shutting my car off from a long drive

And I checked it 10 minutes after shutting down

UPDATE:

But thanks everyone. I bought some more oil and added 3 quarts and it read FULL! YA YA YA

So my car still had to have 2 quarts or so in the engine before I added the oil.

Will be checking my oil every 2 weeks for now on. Lesson learned!

Walmart had sale for 5 quarts jug Quaker synthetic oil 5 20w for $20. I then proceeded to put 3 quarts in and it read full. Car runs better now and my idle is smooth once again

Burnt 3 quarts of oil in 6 months. Most say when you switch to synthetic it will burn alot at first on older cars.

I'm just glad my baby is okay

Not good man, I'd check your oil cap underneath and make sure it's tight, make sure the oil cap on the engine is tight, check your coolant for oil, things like that. Gotta be a leak somewhere. Is an oil light on? Any driving issues or overheating?

are you sure there is no oil on it? if it is fresh it may just be very transparent and you aren't seeing it very well. check it again.

Did you put the drain plug back in when you drained the car. Check the oil filter, you might have left the old gasket on when you replaced it with the new one. Doubleing up on the gasket wont leave a mess under the car, but will blow out when driving down the highway.

I'm sure i put the drain plug back. The car has sat for 2 hours and I rechecked the dipstick on left side of engine and its bone dry.

I'm in my driveway and its slightly inclined but just slightly. I don't know if they will cause anything to make the reading off

The reason i checked my oil today because my car was idling up and down when i first start up.

when I went out to check just now I saw smears of oil on dipstick, but when i cleaned it off and checked the level it was bone dry

I don't know. I'm thinking maybe I should drain the oil tomorrow or just add more. I want to drain the oil to actually see if there is oil in there.

I will go to the store and grab some oil. I'm not going to add it now but will wait until the morning and then drain what oil is left if any to see if there is oil actually there.

Did you put in around 4.5 quarts?

Is your car burning oil?

If you ran regular petroleum based oil before and just now switched to synthetic, you may have the synthetic slipping through the looser tolerances of the piston rings caused by wear. While the petroleum may not slip through, the Synthetic particles are smaller in size than the petroleum ones and could maybe slip through.

your gaskets could have also soaked them up. the gaskets on the motor could have also failed since you switched to synthetic on a car that old. should have just used castrol high mileage...

as long as your gaskets aren't fucked up then yes you can. the high mileage is pretty much a syn blend but made for high mileage motors. i have 136k on my motor and i started with high mileage every 3-5k at 100kish and she is still running strong (knock on wood).

i think mustang227 is right. I been reading on google that when you change to synthetic the first time that it sips in gaskets etc and burns alot the first time while the car get use to it.

I probably have 2 quarts in the oil pan because dipsticks only measure down to 3 quarts

So tomorrow I'm going to try a high mileage syn blend. I will just add to my crankcase instead of draining since most is gone anyway

@Green 6er
Synthetic does not damage gaskets and seals
Myth #1: Synthetic motor oils damage seals.

Untrue. It would be foolhardy for lubricant manufacturers to build a product that is incompatible with seals. The composition of seals presents problems that both petroleum oils and synthetics must overcome. Made from elastomers, seals are inherently difficult to standardize.

Ultimately it is the additive mix in oil that counts. Additives to control seal swell, shrinkage and hardening are required, whether it be a synthetic or petroleum product that is being produced.

On another note has anybody used this:
I use to use way back in college and it would have my car running like a monster

Agreed. I check all of my fluids once a week. It takes less then 5 mins and will save you a whole mess of money if you catch something in time

Driving your car like a race car driver will also make your oil level drop.

-____- Don't add regular oil to synthetic. You'll be asking for problems. Also, you shouldn't keep going back & forth. Once you switch to synthetic, stick with it.

WRONG. Tell that to the Royal Purple that spilled in my garage.

Add a quart and read it again. If it shows up, add more!

I was changing oil in the driveway in the dark and in the snow a couple days ago and also tried the double oil filter gasket mod, needless to say that's a mistake you only make once.
