Drive shaft has some play, what is this?

So I've been thinking my U joints were going bad, but after thorough inspection They are perfectly fine. when i grab the drive shaft and try to move it, it moves a little back and forth. It seems as though the whole thing rotates, including the yoke into the transmission, not just the driveshaft inbetween u joints. anyone have an issue like this or know if this could be the cause of my clunk i get whenever i come to a stop and feels like a hard downshift but isnt the car shifting?

any help is appreciated

yeah forgot to mention, it felt as though when i would turn it, it would be stopped by the rear diff. but like it would tick either way i rotated it. so idk if its something with the tranny or diff. i was hoping someone would know if i could tell somehow.

just looked up some info on this and this could be right. if im leaking a little out of the tailshaft seal does that mean a mad bushing? i noticed right before the driveshaft and the furthest tail end it drips onto my driveway, and the fluid is red, just like my tranny fluid. so does this confirm a bad tailshaft bushing ?

I get a clunk to coming from the back when i shift into reverse and sometimes drive.

If I keep the brakes applied until it fully shifts then I wont hear the clunk.

What is it?

if its coming from the back, and braking helps it, your gears could just be worn in the back and need replacing. whats your mileage and do you have an auto?

it could possibly be a u joint issue as well, but since braking helps, im leaning towards the differential.

when you said you get a clunk, i was reminded of a buddy of mine who was missing teeth in his rear end. might want to check that, if nothing else it could provide a good time for fluid change.

automatic 153k miles its kind of random the clunk noise from the back, I thought it was the u joint as well.

Anyway to do a quick check?

throw your car up on some jackstands and go under there and see if the driveshaft has play at all and visually inspect the u joints. (front and back of shaft) and look at the placement and rubber bushings. if the driveshaft has any play, it could be the u joints.

the really quick and honestly only way to check the diff is to have the car jacked up on stands again and drain the diff fluid, remove the cover, block the front wheels, and inspect the pinion and gears, as well as release the hand break and inspect the inner gears as well.

if all that sounds too complex. just pay a shop to take a look.

Depending on your "clunk" that is normal, because it takes alot of force to engage and disengage the reverse gear, the way the spring is positioned inside the transmission.. the reverse gear is a small gear with about 10 heavey thick teeth, so there hard to chip.

1. check your brake fluid
2. check your pads

other than that im not a huge brake expert haha. i've never had problems with any of my brakes since all i use is the gas pedal
