v6/cobra rear end
Ok guys so im still pretty new to mustangs but, im getting ready to do a build. I currently have a 2001 v6 and I am doing a 01 cobra engine swap, I have been doing a lot of research and just want to double check on the rear end. Am I able to use my stock rear end?? If im correct I believe all of the 99-04 mustangs were 8.8's and that the 99-02 cobras had irs, but im just not totally sure If I can use the same rear. If someone could clear it up for me that would be great. Thanks.

GT = 8.8 Cobra = irs BTW do tell more on the 4v swap...do you have a donor As for using your current rear end...I sure as Hell wouldn't. |

Yea your 7.5 will be maxxed out. Daily driving you would be fine, but the first time you got on it you might grenade a spider bearing...

99-04 Cobras had the IRS. 03/04 had the 31 spline axles. I'll be interested to see how the swap goes. I had (am having?) a hell of a time swapping an 03 Cobra setup into my GT. Incorrect! There was actually an 02 Cobra that was only sold in Australia. It was basically the same as the 01, but with extra foglights.

The 2002 Cobra is on my list of wants. It brings the Import feel to American Muscle. I would just have to scrap the front bumper and put mine on...

Ok thanks for the info guys, I do have another question though about the irs. and also its a 2001 cobra that I am using for a donor, complete car. I have heard some things about the irs that make me nervous. For one a good amount of wheel hopping. Is this something I should worry about?

I'd disagree. I think wheel hop would be more prevalent in IRS than an SRA.
Of course wheel hop can be easily countered with the IRS by upgrading the bushings. Full Tilt Boogie sells a number of kits for upgraded bushings. By eliminating the flex allowed by these soft rubber bushings, you make the whole assembly that much stronger. And I know everyone is quick to bash the IRS, but the SRA takes upgrades to make it handle well too. It's just a different system that requires different modifications.

The IRS will depend on your plans for the car. If you are planning on a lot of dig drag racing, I'd still with an SRA.
If you want to road race, the IRS is leagues above the SRA. If you decide to sell the IRS, let me know I have a friend that wants one.

Take your time, if you already have the donor cobra things should be much easier, take everything out of the cobra since you'll probably need it going from a v6 to a 4v 4.6, computer, all wiring and feul supply would be necessary, but since you have the car this should all be much easier!

Like he said, sell nothing until your car is done and running. Would suck to sell something for $50, then find you need it and have to spend $100 to get another...
