'02 V6 will not stay running. Help.

Hi everyone, I am new to the site. I have a 2002 V6, automatic. A week ago the car would not start at all, so we cured that with putting a new battery in. The old one was shot, started up fine and drove for the past week. Now, the car starts BUT will not stay running if I don't keep the gas pedal pressed. As soon as I let off of the gas, it will shut off. I cannot detect what the problem could be. Thanks in advance to any help or suggestions.

Does it sound like its going to die before it dies or does it just cut out like you turned it off?

It just will cut out like I turned it off. I've pretty much ruled PATS out of the picture because it's functioning like it should, no blinking, etc.

does it do this immediately? Like if you just turn the key it will fire up then die back down?

Have you made any other changes since the battery?

Verify that the IAC is plugged in. Then clean and inspect the IAC and report back. No CEL, right?

Sounds like vacuum leak, but you should definitely try cleaning the MAF/IAC.

all above, plus checl the bolt on the throttle body.. if its broken, or screwed out all the way... it will stall the engine due to lack of air for idle.

Usually good to rule some things out before jumping straight to a conclusion.

Possible culprits:
Alternator
Vacuum leak
IAC
Fuel filter could be clogged enought that more throttle actions gives greater force to push through sludge.
Gremlins
maybe TPS?? <----someone else could chime in on this one.

Sounds like an ignition problem to me, for sure. Wouldnt a vacuum leak give you more of a pretty rough\jerky idle.
