Question

2000 V6: Need engine swap this week (help!)

See my original post on the issue here: Clicking & Squeeky noise under hood (Engine Damage? Sticky Lifters?)

My Engine died this weekend as I was driving.

My car is sitting outside a shop now, and they're waiting for me to give the OK to order a new engine.

They gave me two options:
1. Rebuilt Engine w. aftermarket parts = $2238.00 (Engine) + $835.00 (Labor) = $3075.00
2. Rebuilt Engine w. Ford parts = $2860.00 (Engine) + $835.00 (Labor) = $3695.00

Is the engine with Ford parts actually better? They both come with a 3yr/100K mile warranty..

My car has 83K miles on it and I'll probably sell it within the next 6 months.

It's currently worth <2K b/c of the engine. I'm hoping this restores and adds value to the car.

Thoughts?

Dude, for that much you could swap to a V8 and prolly get most of the other parts you need to do the switch. Just go junkyard engine or switch to a V8 for that price. Not worth it for a 2000 V6 imo.

Edit - shit re read you need it this week, well, I'd still go for a junkyard sixxer engine, especially if you're gonna sell it.

Since your selling it just throw a $500 junk yard motor in it.

Yeah, but then I don't know how many miles are on it.

Plus, this would probably add 3K to the value of the car when I do sell it.. No?

Here's what I'm thinking...
Mustang value with no engine = <2K
Similar mustangs with 83K miles = 5K
Mustang with new Engine = 8K?

So basically I assume I can get that money back when I sell it.

Side question...

Do people see that you swapped an engine when they do a VIN check?

hell you can probably have a junkyard motor for $2-300

spending 3k on a motor is not going to add any value to your car especially when the motor can be had for so cheap

you can probably buy a whole other v6 mustang for less than 3k

Side question for you...

Did you check the engine tag when you bought the car? lol

Nopee...

So really it comes down to how long do I really think I want to own this car... IF I want to own if for a long time, I should get a nice engine. IF I want to sell it, I shouldn't.

Well yes and no. The thing is, like some of these guys stated, you can get a clean, low mileage great condition engine from a junkyard, as opposed to wasting all that money on a new one that could go for a tuner, gears, anything worth substance.

So this shop said they only had used engines with over 100K miles on it. He quoted me at $700 for a engine with 102K miles. So, $700 (Engine) + $750 (Labor) = $1450

How do you KNOW you're getting a great condition engine though?

If it's been sitting in the junkyard, the lifters are probably sticky etc...

Doesn't work that way, when people see that you have a new engine the value plummets and if you don't say anything then the valve stays the same.

When people see cars with new engines, especially in low mile cars like yours their first thoughts are why did the old one fail so early, did the owner not change the oil, did he beat the car to death, and if so what else is getting ready to fail?

Trust me no one will pay extra for a car that was fixed after it was abused, they'd rather get a numbers matching car that never failed in the first place. Just get a junkyard engine, because to the next buyer both a junkyard engine and a new engine are bad things.

Basiclly yes. Went to car-parts.com and typed in you 94404 zip and there is a 25k motor available for under $1000. Could probablly get it for $600 delivered to the shop + core charge.

If you spend 3.6K on an STOCK v6 engine I'll vote for you as DA of the year.

Your selling the car - buy a junk yard motor
You keeping the car - LKQ yourself an 800$ motor with warranty.

Putting a new engine in a v6 mustang isn't going to increase the value.

Why wouldn't it add value?

You wouldn't pay more for a Mustang with a brand new engine PLUS a 3 year warranty on the engine?

I guess you'd have to make certain it was good, but if it has low miles and looks good (have a buddy look it over if you don't know) etc, I don't see why not?
