first, you should degrease them. i prefer simple green. Then get some 400 grit sandpaper and scuff the bejesus out of the until you see no smooth spots. Make sure you sand the same direction (front to back for valve covers). Prime and let dry. I would also hit the primer up with 400 grit. Shoot some paint and then clear. With the clear you can bake it in your oven at 150 for a couple minutes. Also remember, its winter time and cold weather and paint doesnt get along very well

For me, I degreased the shit out of them, used 60 grit to tear into the nasty coating (my extras were bubbled and shit), hit some 400 grit to smooth it out, sprayed some Primer, hit that with 600 grit, sprayed 3 coats of engine paint, wet-sanding with 600 lightly each time, then hit up with some 1000 grit, and 5 layers of clear.

Looked great until I got busy at work and forgot to peel the tape off around the labels, and when I did I took a chunk the size of a quarter out of one of them. That reminds me, I need to fix it before I toss them on the car during the cam install.

Prolly not. Just remember, the more prep time you put in, the higher quality and satisfaction you'll get from the end result. Kinda like sex

^^^ Exactly.

Needs a good coat of primer to be able to stick. You are looking at about $20 in paint and materials, but very worth it.

What I did was to scrape all the loose paint with a paint scraper and sand them then primed with a type of primer for plastic (from O'rileys) and then painted them with engine paint. If I were going to do it again I would remove all the paint with paint stripper or by sanding.

Yeah, I'll tell you from all these comments and my own experience, I would just take them right to a Powder Coat shop.

My issue was humidity, in Florida, lot of it. Tried twice to paint them, did the whole paint scrape, degreaser, then 400grit primer then paint, etc. Both times overnight it all peeled off. They just don't seem to hold paint very well.

I can post pics later, but the pc came out fantastic for only $80. Gloss Black, but of course pc can be just about any color you'd like.
