Felpro uses a sticky coating which failed in my case (completely came apart). Don't put anything on the head gaskets. The gasket surfaces have to be free of all old gasket material, have the correct surface finish, and be absolutely clean and dry. I cleaned mine with lacquer thinner.

Right, all about the prep work! Similar to painting in that sense. I used Acetone (similar product) to remove all traces of old gasket after I scraped it all down. Had the heads tested and machined. I second having nothing else on the gaskets themselves. There are a few spots where you want to apply silicone gasket maker as well, Haynes and I'm sure Chilton's manuals will tell you where (if not we can).

I'm pretty sure it was a felpro gasket kit I used (whatever Advance Auto sells) and haven't run into any problems. Got a couple thousand miles on her after rebuilding the top end.
