I've Got Some Questions
Hey guys, I have some questions if you don't mind. I have been considering modding my v6, but I'm thinking for me, I would rather start out with modding a v8, it just seems like I would be getting more of my money's worth. But problem is I love my car, and I have a thirst to learn, even if it be the hard way. So I am considering getting a 94 or 95 gt and using that to swap the parts over to my car.
I have spent the last two weeks reading about this and learning what all I will need. It is not something I am going to start right away, I want to wait til summer probably, but I have a couple questions about this swap. My first question is, do I need a computer out of a 5 speed (which is what my car is) or will the computer work from an auto? I kind of assume I need the 5 speed. Second question is, I know the body styles are the same, but will I run into anything that won't directly swap over? Third, between my dad and I we have quite a few tools, but are there any tools I will need that are specific to this job? Fourth, I know it will come with the t45 tranny, but since they are pretty similar can I beef up my t5 or is it just better to swap the t45 too? Also, I am willing to hear your advice or comments whether negative or positive, but I am not selling my car, and I really do not want to keep the 3.8 in there, so its either 4.6 or 5.0 and I have read that 5.0 mods are cheaper and that it is a good engine. plus its a freakin 5.0. I understand this may get expensive or take a while, but this is what I want to do. So thanks guys, I appreciate all the help. |

I would Op for the 5.0... Easy to make cheaper Power with em I hear..
My advice is the same for you as it is for me.. Save up and buy a GT and KEEP your V6! Thats my plan once my V6 is Nice and Shiny again.

...Big thoughts here.. But here we go..
A V8 is for Torque I reckon.. So If everyone wants to measure horsepower.. Most Stock New 4cyl cars rape us in horsepower.. BUT... Aluminum Drive shaft, Light weight Flywheel, Performance Clutch.. More RWHP. Gears will wake any car up basically.. 3.73's would be my choice with a 5spd as a DD. So Horsepower isn't that big of a deal unless you are doing 100+ straight line driving all day. ...Which is Boring. ...Anyways. All in all, I would rather have better Engine and Handling Response, Than a bunch of power I'm throwing out the window with Stock Drive train. Our cars have power, we can unlock it to the Rear wheels with Drive train mods. Has anyone done Aluminum Drive shaft or anything to Unleash some HP from the Motor to the wheels?

gears, tlok, and take your flywheel to the machinist for a little lightening....dont spend 400 on a lightweight flywheel..every one i've talked to has said that actually has the aluminum driveshafts that they were'nt worth the money....remember you still need some rotational weight to help aid with maintaining speed

Because Race Car.

Not as of yet. If I think of anything I will bring it back up. that answered my questions I had for now. I guess the next step will be to find the parts car for a good price. I have seen some of earlier years but no 94 or 95. My long term plan is to build the 5.0, but i wanna get the swap done first.
I guess for now all I can do is keep my eyes open and read, read, read. Thanks guys, I'll let you know if I have any more questions. |

What would you guys consider to be the most difficult part of the swap? just the time it takes or the transfer of parts or what?

why don't you just sell your car and buy a 94, 95....same body so it's not like you'll be losing looks

because I really like this car, I really don't want to sell, and I want to learn. I'm not one to do things the easy way, and buying a new car would be easy. i wouldn't learn anything. I just think this would be a fun project to do, and i know i can do it, and I want to put it into this car because its a great car, it was my first stang, and its stock performance, but i have put a lot of time into this car in other areas. Its just what I want to do. for the first time i know where I want to go with this car, its just a matter of learning about it, which for me is all part of the fun. Plus I want to rebuild the engine in time and from what i understand the 5.0s are one of the best engines to rebuild. So even though I may not get started on this project as soon as Id like, i do know what I am going to do.
Thanks for the info though guys. I'll keep learning and when I'm ready to make the swap i'll let you know how it goes

This. Those old 5.0s are probably my favorite engines for those 2 reasons.
Also OP, a T5 from a 96-04 will work with some modifications. I know the input shaft has to be changed and I believe the bellhousing as well. And if you end up deciding to do this, let you insurance company know that the car has a different engine in it. Right now your insurance is for a V6 engine and they won't cover a V8 on your current plan. Don't get scared of V6 insurance, it would have been cheaper on me (insurance wise) to have a 99-04 GT than a 99-04 V6 in the Cedar Rapids area.
