Broken Oil Pan
So while jacking up the car to do the oil change while putting the car back together....pretty much for what ever reason even though the jack was completly centered under the car and before we were able to get it on stands the jack slipped and the car drop about a foot and a 3 inch wide section of the front oil pan is missing...shattered/broke out....and in some magic way the tip of the jack tht actually jacks up the car some how managed to slip of and fall between the front sway bar and the rack and pion assembly....which btw is like a 4 inch or 5 inch gap while the tip of the jack is like not more nthan a 1/4 inch in diiameter of the distance between the rack and sway bar....
My question is sence I reard the haynes manual or w/e it said to remove the starter when me and my dad got under it ....it looks like we deff don't have to remoce the starter....is there anything else I don't have to remove...infact what do I have to do the lift the oil pan...well engine up to get at the oil pan....anyone got a procedure or know how thank you....most fustrated right now, my car would be complete in the next hour if this didn't hhappen

I would remove the starter, anything electrical or flammable can set an oil pan on fire. Thats just me

Yes you need to, some of the bolts the w/ the starter I believe go to the bell housing, but regaurdless it only takes 10 mins. Like 2 bolts, and a couple of nuts holding on the wires and it slides right out. Be sure you double check for all the bell housing bolts. And idk about a T5, but I pull my engine from the auto by itself. Very simple. But if your pulling the tranny too, then yeah you should be able to leave the starter and just remove the wiring.

I know exavtly what you mean .... get over it
![]() Oil pain is quick n easy though. Pull engine, flip upside down (sine you dont have to drain oil its no biggie :p Unscrew the 8mm bolts pulll it off. Clean surface well w/ blade/scraper, clean w/ b12 or something like it, buy black RTV silicone, do A nice bead all the way around. Stick the new pan on, w/ a clened surface as well. Bolt on evenly. |

Why pull the engine when you can just get a engine support bar, drop the k member, and replace the pan with the engine in the car?

When I had to buy an oil pan for my car the dealer wanted to know how many bolts mine had, apparently there are two different bolt counts out there and the dealer didn't have any info on what years they corresponded to.

Cause pulling an engine isn't hard. I had mine out in two days. Took my time, had to go buy some sockets I lost, and only worked maybe 4 hours both days. If i would Have gotten up early and got my ass to work, i would have had that engine out in less then a day.
Then you can replace seals, check on parts and what not. I mean shit you better hope you didn't damage anything other then the pan. Hell have you done the HCI shit you were gonna do ? now is a PERFECT time |

Yeah but two days to pull an engine is a lot longer then a few hours to change the pan with the engine in the car, plus you can still look over everything while your under the car. Oil leaking from the bell housing shows that you have a bad rear main seal, you don't have to look directly at the seal to know that it is or isn't leaking. Don't get me wrong though I'm all for doing things the right way and in the past porting heads has turned into full rebuilds because "I'm already halfway there so why not spend a few hundred extra for a full rebuild", I just wouldn't go around looking for oil leaks when the dipstick reads full if you get what I mean.

I just supported the engine from up top and dropped the k member, engine height wasn't an issue with nothing below it so it stayed at installed height, it only takes a few hours to do it this way from start to finish.
