Chris's V6'er starter guide and more
For most of new comers or any V6'ers questions heres a post FOR YOU!
Talks about bolt ons, internals, nitrous, power adders and more. lots of questions can be answered here and you can find what you want! Well lets start small, and Cheap! Here is a list of mods with sites and a description of what the modification will do etc... Cold Air Induction or Intake(CAI): By reading the name it's pretty obvious what this mod will do, it'll take in cold air and depending on the filter it'll take in more air then a stock paper air filter. Prices will range from $20-$250 or more depending on the intake and brand. USUALLY this mod is worth 3-5hp, You will see and read claims of 7-12hp but thats not happening unless you've got a good amount of mods on the engine. "Where can i find it?" American muscle You will not really find a great difference between CAI's 1-3hp if that. Next mod low budget mod Spark Plug wires: These are good for: Looks for engine, heat, and when you get more power for your engine. You wont feel a differnce with these, it doesnt add power Want them? RPMoutlet There are other budget mods but I'll get to them later. Next let go with a V6 FAMOUS question, "I want my car to roar!"....Exhaust. There are many different exhaust systems, mufflers to choose from, performance is all but a few hp difference from the mufflers, most of the power from the exhaust system will be choosen by your headers and mid pipe and the thickness of the piping on your exhaust. exhaust power ranges from 0-30hp or more depending on your set up on your car and what exhaust set up you choose. Next question "I want the most power i can get from my exhaust...how do i do this?!" heres what you'll see the most from with headers, a mid pipe and cat back: Long tube headers, a catless also known as off-road(o/r) H or X pipe, and the muffler of your choice. Magnoflow and Borla are good performance muffler but you will only see smallhp difference from flowmaster, Mac or and other muffler brands, so sound is what you'll be looking for. The next question is where?! Long tubes and shorties mufflers mid pipes and more many other sites have exhaust kits for the v6 as well, its all about preferance. If you just looking for different sound and the look, then keeping your y pipe is ok..but for others who want better sound and power in the future true dual exhaust is the way to go. Also check out local muffler shops for custom ehxaust kits for your car want to hear some different sounding ehxaust? click here for another post Sound clips Underdrive Pulley's/ UD Pulleys: What does this do? Free's up hp and gives you horsepower. Its a good bolt on modification and you can see about 8rwhp through out the entire power band. Some precautions and good tips when buying this mod, get the alternator pulley. it isnt a MUST but when your running an aftermarket sound system or other electronics in the car the alternator wont be able to keep up with it and your car will or could dim or die on you at a stop. where to get it? Rpm mustangs Vmptuning 3.8 Chips, Tuners, Flashers A chip is a device that goes in your car, more or less gives your computer codes to read off and give your car more hp and tq and some times better gas milage. hp range is aroud 10-30hp or more depending on your set up Tuner is well...a tuner, its used to tune your car to perform how you want it to, but to a certain point. You can adjust certain things about your car. Flashers have a tuner in them as well as 3+ tunes, which is like having 3+chips on a deviced that you can load on your car by your choice. SCT, Diablo and Sniper are the more Famous Flashers out there. Most dyno shops will use a SCT software program or sniper. Therefore a SCT XCAL2 or livewire or sniper is something you'd rather look into. The advantages of a Flasher is clearly a better buy for obvious reasons, why buy a chip when you can buy a flasher for about $100 more and pretty much get 3+chips. AND when you need more or different tunes, you can have them sent THROUGH email to you on your your flasher. Ok..so where do you get this stuff? Crazylegs! VMP American Muscle Gears and T-lok or lockers! Gears are a great mod for the need to accelerate faster from 0-60 or just to improve your 60foots. They'll increase accelaration in all gears greatly(mainly off the line) but will not add horsepower. Gears come in 2.73 or 3.27(which most v6's have stock) 3.45, 3.55, 3.73, 3.90, 4.10, 4.30s and MORE! the bigger the gear ratio the quicker....ex: 3.55< 3.73 < 4.10s < 4.30 < 4.56. BUT for those that plan on hitting low 9s or lower a high gear ratio like 4.56 or 4.30s is not the gear for you because you will run out of gear... T-lok also known has posi-trac, traction lock etc.. is whats going to make you stop those one wheel burn outs and turn it into 2! It'll also give you better traction since both wheels will be spinning instead of one wheel. this is a must if you plan on having a good 60foots and if you have a lot of power. If you a plan on having a 500rwhp car or around that area a locker is a better buy for you. You want to know where? American muslce speed concepts also crazylegs sells them as well so ask him Ok now before we get into the real heavy performance stuff lets hit up Suspension Suspension would be, springs, shocks, struts and control arms and more, or for those that choose coil overs. Switching suspension out with after market suspension can improve handling greatly, traction and apperance, but depending on your set up you might be trading a smoother ride for looks and handling. If you lower your car more then 1.5 inches you will have to buy more then just springs, such as C/c plates, struts, springs and shocks. Want to know where? rpm outlet American muscle 3.8 also other famous places like steeda and eibach on there home web site can obviously sell you there products "I already have that stuff! What else can i do?" Cam, Heads, polishing, port jobs and Power Paks Cam- is a great performance mod, can give you PLENTY of power an average of about 20-30hp depending on the cam. A Cam will also improve your engine sound as well. This is not a bolt on, and if your not to good with engines then i dont recommend you trying to install this. Different grinds on a cam and different cams will act and perform and make your car sound differntly. Choosing the right cam is important. Comp cams would be the leader in Cams. Almost every if not every car in NASCAR uses cams from COMP cams. get em here: 3.8 Comp Cams Tom Morana SSMS super six motor sports Heads Heads can add some NICE numbers to your car depending what kind you get. You can port and polish them, or upgrade them. Most upgraded heads will be already ported and polished such as ssms's stage 2 stage2+ and both Stage3's. Also when you've got POWER in your car, you'll need some good heads to help the air flow. Everyone knows. the more air and fuel...the more power...heads will allow that! Find them here: SSMS Tom morana Power Paks....what they are: Well its an upgraded, cam, cylinder heads, Upper and lower intake manifold. Comes in Stage 2, Stage 2+ and Stage 3. Gains go from 70-100hp! depending on your cars setup. The Stage 3 is best for power adders and nitrous. The power pak comes with ported and polished upper and lower intakes, stage 2 or 2+ or the stage 3 "superheads" and a custom grinded cam. Who sells them? SSMS is the only company selling a kit like this that i know of. theres another company selling a power pak like this i just dont know who. Now for the serious power or what some might say going under the knife. Turbochargers, Superchargers and Nitrous. Lets Start out with that cheap but powerful bottled kit that everyone is so scared of cause fast and the furious makes you think it'll blow your engine. NITROUS/N2O!! (NOT NOS!!!!) "yo man i be hearing about the Nos but what it do?" Well Nitrous basically GREATLY increases power in your car by shots by the size of the jet your using for your system. Now nitrous CAN be dangerous if your using to big of shots with a stock bottom end or you dont have you engine prepped or set up for it. Usually carb'd motors will use the big 200+shots of nitrous. On a stock V6 a 50-75 shot is a safe shot to use with a nearly stock motor, IF it is set up correctly and has a good tune. THE MAIN thing about nitrous is how you have it set up. If its not set up correctly then OF course you can expect all the horro stories about it to come true with your car. Some good things...Nitrous is a torque monster and lots of dragsters use it. A 100shot will generally shoot you about 100hp give or take some hp. but the torque incredibly more. If you want to go with a big shot of nitrous SSMS now sells a 4.3L carb'd engine ready to go and be fed nitrous. to know more about nitrous go here Where to get it? Crazylegs Zex nitrous direct many other places have them as well, ebay, american muslce etc Supercharger A Supercharger is Forced induction and a power adder. Lots of power comes from a supercharger and it will sure help out with going faster. Its belt driven and comes in 3 types, Centrifigul superchargers, twin screw and roots style superchargers. power can range from as low as 40 or 50hp to 1000hp or even more. all depends on the set up, intercooling, power pipe, ehxuast, fuel injectors, the car breathing, tunning, pulley size, and more. Some good items to get with a s/c that your more then likely going to need, fuel injectors and a fuel pump. Forged internals will most likely be need if you want to exceed and go beyond stock limits. Boost on a supercharger is mainly controlled by pulley size. Who Sells them? VMP stripper motors RPM outlet 3.8 After a supercharger be sure to get a good dyno tune so it runs smoothly Turbo The king of power TURBO! A big power booster, it works off your exhaust fumes for power! It recyclyes your exhaust gases pretty much. Turbo usually takes time to spool, smaller the turbo the quicker it spools, but once it's spooled your in for some good power depending on the psi. you can see 40-over 1000hp from this depending all in turbo size, psi, boost level, set up, intercooling, and much more. Turbos are a Great mod but need great caring. Just like a supercharger it needs a good tune to run at its peak. there not cheap unless you can make it yourself and they're not easy to put together if its not a kit or bolt on kit. Boost....on a turbo kit boost is controlled by the wastegate. theres is a spring inside the waste gate with a boost controller you can adjust from as much psi as it allows. Where to get a turbo kit? TMA turbo 3.8 FACTS about turbo. a 7psi turbo vs an 11psi procharger= 297rwhp and 322rwtq VS 304rwhp and 301rwtq The turbo'd V6 made MORE torque at just 7psi then the prochager could make at 11psi. Wana see what happens with a 7psi turbo vs 7psi prochager? procharger makes 269 rwhp 267 rwtq thats about 30rwhp less and almost 70rwtq less! proof:http://www.tmaturbo.com/dyno.htm Alright How do i keep the engine strong and safe? Forged internals! its basically stronger rods, pistons and crank so it can handle MORE power where are they? SSMS 3.8 Tom morana Engines and stroker kits We all know what an engine is....so quickly to stroker kits and strokers. Stroker kits are forged internals made for a 4.0, 4.2, 4.3L for the V6 at least. get them here: Tom morana Hopefully this is helpful and people read this! Have fun modding and Stay safe, and keep it off the streets and take it to a drag strip![[/b][/u]

Very nice to-the-point write up Chris. A list should be written up on mods that are performance worthless and people should steer clear of them. Example: The resistor power chip, the Tornado, the Turbonator, electric superchargers, larger throttle bodies and fuel injectors on stock motors ect.

Hey guys we do have a sticky that is broken down for different manufacturers. http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...st-vt3770.html
Does it tell you what the parts do? No, but it does have links, and no matter people are gonna keep asking. Sticky or no sticky. It will happen. We are also trying to not clutter up the v6 section with section. We are one of the few sections that doesn't have a subforum so the more stickies we have the more of a clutter on the front page, and less room for topics. Yes, I know we only have 2, but this is what we are trying to get away from. We first need to work on not posting items in the wrong sections, and also try to stray from same topics. Also stop people from having multiple threads on the same thing(v6 section is pretty good about that). If you guys are really interested in having something v6 specific feel free to pm me. I am starting to want a starter type guide. No names will be put in the topic, but what I can do is have you guys write stuff up, and pm it to me. I will give you guys the credit for it, but remember something. If I do this...I want this to have very specific information, and you guys have to write as if the person who is reading it knows nothing. Do not post any links, pictures only information. I will make a thread first, and we can edit it as it is needed. But try to stray from using words that can confuse a person who is new to the modding scene, and may not know a lugnut from a throttle body. |
