car wont shift out of park!

so i was leaving for work, and my car wont shift out of park! did some google magic and im thinking its the brake light relay switch with the brake pedal?

i have a general idea where its located and im sure i can find it, i just need to know if thats what it is, and where i can get a new one.

i recently just put in a led 3rd brakelight. idk if that blew the switch, if so, ill switch back to stock. anyway, i just need confirmation im looking at the right thing.

oh yeah. my brake lights dont work, so thats another thing.

i basically need to know if my local autozone will carry it or i need to waltz in to the dealer.

I had the same problem, it ended up being on of the switch wires was cut. Also had a problem with my brake lights not working, people would pull up to me at stop lights saying they weren't working, I'd go stop have my girlfriend press the pedal while I checked them and they were all working fine. This went on for a week until I finally found out that the brake lights would only work when pressed hard. I bent a tab on the switch out and they were back to working fine.

hmm. my wiring didnt look cut or anything. maybe ill fiddle around with it before buying a new one. or ill buy the new one and see if it changes anything.

i dont want it to randomly not work sometimes, so ill probably just end up buying a new switch. its so weird, this happened right after installing my led 3rd brake light. like the morning after. the night before my car worked fine. huh.

UPDATE:

Went under my footwell looked at the fuse box, all fuses connected to shift interlock and brake lights are fine, same with electrical distribution box in the engine bay.

to get the car to start i do the whole turn key to on and go to neutrual and start then i can drive.

my driving lights work! so the brake lamps light up, but not when i press the brake pedal they do not go brighter.

i know this is probably the brake light switch like i said before, but i wanted to confirm that if this doesnt have anything to do with my LED third brake light, i dont want to buy more if the problem could be that. even though it was working fine the night before this happened.

follows the wires off of your brake switch till you come to a box, that box could be jacked up if your switch is fine.

okay so i tried unplugging the switch, and then i connected the wires to complete the circut thinking that the lights will turn on, but nothing! if i touch the two wires the brake lights SHOULD come on.

so im maybe wrong on the switch? maybe its the junction box? i just cant seem to find where those wires go and which box it is.

those wires go to the neutral safety switch. When it goes out the car won't let you shift out of park.

the brake light solenoid doesn't affect the interlock, just the brake lights.

The NSS is $40 plus shipping at RockAuto, or $50 picked up at AutoZone.

it may not be related to brake switch. i had this type of problem and it was the shifter handle. came slighty lose, there is a set screw on front side of handle make sure it is seated and the handle is down all the way. its worth looking at.

^thats possible as well, that actually did happen to me one time, it was my own fault though, installed a shifter and did not tighten it down all the way.

figured it out. i had changed all the brakelight fuses but they kept blowing for some reason. so the brake light switch was fine. the LED third brake light was shorting out and blowing my fuses to a resoldered new wiring on it and onto the connectors and now it works fine. man those things are made cheap
