Am I getting bull-crapped - True Dual Exhaust Pricing

So after researching the hell out of what exhaust set-up I would like best on my 04 V6 Stang, I decided I would go with MAC Long Tubes, Divorced Duals, and Flowmaster 40s. Earlier today I called up a shop to see what the price would be for the job and they said it would be about $550, this was without installing the headers.

Also when I told him about the headers I wanted to go with, he said that it would be a bad idea with the MAC LTs, said it would screw up the backpressure and cause other issues.

Is this a decent asking price for an exhaust job or am I getting shitted. Is he at all correct about the headers? Also, I live in NC, if that matters any.

And while true that you will lose some backpressure, it's not going to mess anything up. Not enough loss to do damage.

Examples: The thousands of v6 Stangs running MAC LT's.

Yea thats the same thing I thought, but he has to be bull-shitting hard on the price. I was initially thinking around $250-$350 for the exhaust set-up without the headers, not $550. I guess its time to look for other shops.

For divorced duals with you supplying the mufflers that's way too much

I found an ad on craigslist and decided to go there, as soon as I turned onto the road where shop A) was, there were at LEAST 20 shops I could choose from.. I went to the first one with an open bay and negotiated a good price for install (just weld on 40's)

Just to clarify, this is with them supplying the muffler and the piping for the exhaust. Didn't think about this but, it should be a good bit cheaper if I were to buy the muffler separately, right?

Yes it should be cheaper if you supply them. Normally the shop will charge more for the part so they can make even more profit. Also it was said earlier, ask how much it would be "cash" (ie under the table if they will do it) that's just rediculous how much they want. I bet if you went with dumps right before the axle it would be considerably cheaper

i paid $350 for mine to get done without headers. they supplied all of the materials, which included thrush welded mufflers, the tail pipes, exhaust tips, and they fabricated an h pipe for me. so yes, i would say they are asking you quite a bit for that. try calling some more exhaust shops in your area, tell them you are on a tight budget, and you might can find a cheaper quote

Shops tend to charge more for products, but if you bring in your own parts then they tend to charge more for labor than if you had bought the parts from them. It's sort of a lose-lose situation.

So I could get a better idea. How much should I be paying out for the exhaust job:
Divorced Duals
Flowmaster 40s

If I were supplying the mufflers. Then how much would the added price of the installation of the MAC LTs cost onto that. Just want to make sure I don't get cheated on the price.

..
i paid 300 for custom catback 2.5" with 3.5" magnaflow slant cut tips i supplied thrush mufflers (bout 70 or 80 shipped)

so about 400 for a divorced catback setup, and this was straight cash and cheapest for atleast 60 miles or more in NoVA
this was within the last year.

My first setup which was welding up my mufflers and Hi-flow CATS and dumped behind the seats. cost about 180.00
Second setup about a year later was to finish piping out to the back with tips. 120.00
Third setup was a different shop, Cut off CATS and changed the tips out for better ones, i dont remember but i would say i have spent close to 420.00 on it all-together, thats going back 3 times.

This really depends on what all you asked for.

Bend types, piping used, size, flanges, hangers, muffler type, tip type/size

Long tubes are going to require some welding of flanges unless you solid weld from there back. If you chose that ... well Id rather not get an infarct for the comment Id say

I only have 1 exhaust shop in this town, Dont even ask the price I paid for a fucking catback ... crazy shit ...

Also know that its not a bad thing to shop for used parts ... you can find a set of used headers and mufflers and save a dime or two.

As well with tips though they may not be shiney new :p
