289 swap
Ok, I really want to be serious here. As a HS graduation gift, me and my dad may be swapping in a 289 from an older stang. I know that I'll need to bring the transmission, bullet likely the 4 speed (idk the name of it) manual or the T5 manual. Will most likely also swap in the cord 8.8 from a gt.
My question is, is this do able. Since the old carbed 289s have no computer systems, what would have to be done to make this work. Also, would the stock K member still work to mount the engine. And lastly, do I think that the stock suspension can hold the weight. 289s are not the heavy compared to the 3.8. Help me out here |

Oh, alright well at least mod it before you do the swap... IF you do it, so your not slower than what you are now.

With a 4 barrell carb I highly doubt that 289 would be any slower. If I had the funds to do my 347 swap i'd give you my 289
. As for the weight I don't think it would be a problem on the stock suspension but thats really just a guess. Without the computer systems and all going into a car that had them previously i'm guessing your gauge cluster will also have to come out. Would this still be street legal in your area to do this?Edit: well looking up the weight specs it shows the 3.8 weighs in at about 351lbs and the 289 about 460lbs

Not much of a difference between a 289 and 302 really. You can get a 351w for the same price as most 302s. I would suggest getting one over a 302. Stronger setup, block and etc. If you want to be a real baller, buy that block and a stroker kit can be had for cheap.

True, but I'm not looking for extream power. The 289 would be more of a price of history going into a new car. And @ fastback, this should be ok, as we have no emission testing here. But we have to look into funds first, mainly if we can buy a new crate engine or buy a used rebuilt motor.

Umm, what's the inspection/emissions laws like in Ohio? Because with an old carb'd setup you can kiss your OBDII compliance goodbye. Just thought I'd point that out before you dig yourself too deep a hole.

Ive heard of some radical high revving builds with the 289. Haven't seen any yet.
I just wont go w/ anything but roller cam engine and EFI for a DD ... Thats just me though. But if you dont mind, do it. A 289 would be cheap as hell to find im sure, everyone ditches them for a 302/351. |

Yeah I can see what you mean . Though if you take out the computer system, wouldn't that remove the PATS system?

You'll also lose lots of other functionality. You might need to wire up all new gauges for the dash, and who knows if your CCRM will function properly. It might be more effort than you think.

Wire a fan to switch for the radiator. Then use an inline pump. Bye ccrm dont need it anymore.
Gauges will be an easy setup. Brand new from autometer your probably be at 350+ dollars on them. To they everybody does the 351 swap.. There is a madness behind it for a reason. Want to be a baller, do a 427w swap. I bought mine as a non-roller motor plan to throw in a basic 351w. Well I got caught up in the mod bug, now I have my stock block holding me back from real power lol. Like I said, a 289 is basically a 302. The deck height and stroke difference is minimal from what I hear(dont hear much of people using 289s).
