2000 mustang start to engine modding

I have a 2000 v6 and i want to start doing modifications to get more horsepower, i want about 500hp, the question is where to start, should i do simple stuff, long tube headers, dual exhaust, maybe a CAI (i read a little info about a windstar intake which i was wondering about), or should i got straight to the engine like an open port upper and lower manifold, any ideas?

thanks, masey

500 hp simple stuff first. I think you have to get to learning just the basics CAI Exhaust and such. The F.I's gets complicated.

Okay so you want to get 500hp, but do you have about $5000 (very low estimate) to make that kind of power? If your serious forget all those little mods and build the engine.

Dump the six, get a GT or a Cobra and either supercharge or turbo that. ive only heard of 1 V6 Mustang that has exceeded 500 rwhp and that was a twin turbo monster

If you want to get your six there your gona spend a loooooooot of coin

Your gona have to upgrade the rear end, forge internals, the turbo/supercharger, labor, tune, supporting mods i.e. injectors fuel pump etc... lots of work and money. Even with a turbo or SC your only gona make 300-350ish safely on the stock internals

Bluesmokes: Hes gona be spending way more than 5k to reach his goal...

i can put the CAI on it, its just cold out and i dont feel like doing it, i have 4.10 gears, i got from a buddy for cheap, and an 8.8 tlok, i also got the car for free and would rather put money into and make it truly mine rather then just buy a gt, while i would love the rumble, this will be my car, unless i can find a cheap cobra

Now since you have a 8.8 tlok you have to find an 8.8 rear off of a gt. A cheap cobra would still be in the teens. How many miles are on your car?

thats what im doing with my six, however 500 rwhp is a long stretch. Id say 350rwhp is more obtainable.

By upgrading the rear end i meant replacing your stock 7.5 with a GTs 8.8. Our rear ends are weak, being able to be broken on stock power (rare but it has happened)

Also a CAI doesn't give much of a gain at all, its so minimal most of the time you wont even feel the difference

Tha Fuhq ? (to the red part)
300-400 all day on stock engine 500-800 on a forged turbo set up. (single turbo)

Turbo + supporting mods (like fuel) + tune 4kish

To handle the power you want a locked rear or 8.8. 500-1000.

HCI will be great on your turbo set up but the stock cam works very well with turbo's.

To get mugh more then 350whp your gonna want forged internals. Not gonna say you have to have them, butttt I would reccomend it.

Bascially OP.

If your serious about this. Do the turbo and supporting mods on your current budget. If your happy with that, then look into getting a forged motor. But chances are your budget wont support that and 500whp unless you do ... "sidework"

Contact JT for a turbo hot side piping and go from there. You can do some P&P work yourself. Windstar would be a great swap and will handle the PSI you'll put on a stock engine easily. Im not sure how much they can hold, but im sure its a pretty damn good amount.

But you need to test your engine first, make sure it can handle any mods. New fluids/filters all across. Compression test also.

Also are you a 5speed or auto ?

Like i said Mike I have only heard of one V6, and that one was a TT setup making i believe 700 rwhp. Now im sure theres more but ive personally only seen one (thus why i said "ive only heard of 1...")

Save money lol

Im personally gona do supporting mods first, i.e. rear end, suspension (to get that power to the ground), save for the internals and a 4.3, H/C/I, flush all fluids (general maintenance), and then finally your choice of F/I (preferably a turbo set up)

And my apologies OP

What Reaper said. First step is to step back, get out the engineering pad, and start jotting down your total goal.

Do you want to supercharge or turbo to attain that goal? This will determine your header and intake manifold set-up.

Do you plan to be a drag race monster? A corner carver? A fast DD?

If you want to supercharge:
Vortech V2 SI kit
LongTube headers
Windstar Intake Manifold
Forged Engine
P&P Heads and Lower Intake (Remove IMRCs)
Aggressive Cam w/ rebuilt valvetrain
Dual Exhaust

If you want to Turbo:
JTStang's hot side
Good turbo
Treadstone Intercooler
Custom Cold Side Piping
Windstar Intake Manifold
Forged Engine
P&P Heads and Lower Intake (Remove IMRCs)
Good Cam w/ rebuilt valvetrain
Dual Exhaust

In either route, to support that hp, you will want to upgrade to a GT 8.8 (sounds like you have the gears, but all GTs came with a T-lok so you don't really need that), and a built suspension, such as Mach 1 Tokico Shocks, Lowering Springs, Lower Control Arms, and some Subframe Connectors.

The suspension and rear you can do while you think about your goals with the engine.

Oh, and come talk to me when you are ready to start buying, and I'll save you some money.

Now remember as a DD you want make sure you build it as solid as possible, worst thing is having your daily break down on you...

You dont need new suspension. Stock is fine for now.

Turbo kit, your choice of rear end. Fuel pump. Injectors. Handheld Tuner (will be used by a dyno company). Then go with the turbo as said above. SC wont get you near what you want w/o internals and extra mods.

Id say go to that point, and see what you want to do from there. hci p&p ECT ECT
