Taking the car to the guy who is gonna be doin the work Sat. Gonna trailer the car down there since its running so rough.

Plans:
  • Check current engine out, make sure its not fixable
  • Swap in new engine if the above is false. Have not gotten the engine yet.
  • Do some painting on the engine bay and maybe the engine itself.

Looking at a used 3.8 with 93k miles for $530. Company claims to do steam cleaning before it is sent, so that will be nice.

What do you mean, not fixable? I thought your engine just needed to be rebuilt?

I think he's weighing the idea between cost of fixing vs. cost of a used but running motor.

If you end up dropping in a new motor, get the old one back and start a performance build.

I would have needed to find a donor car, and like I said in the last thread... I just don't have the means or time atm for that. Wish I could have...

We are going to make sure it needs a new engine before replacing it. I am sure we could fix this one, but the time and money spent may end up being very close to just dropping in a new engine, which would be less work and less time for the same net result.

A new engine, or a engine with 93K on it? I wouldn't call a fresh rebuild on your current engine the same net result as a used engine with 93K miles. I understand that dropping in a used engine will be cheaper in the short term, but I'd hate to see you have to do the same work twice.

yea the 4.2 is a direct swap, just take a few parts off your car and put them on the 4.2 and it drops right in.

Single port sixer runs 150HP whilst the split port runs the 190 to 193HP.

Got the car down to the guy today.

His first impressions upon hearing it: a lifter or rocker arm thats not working correctly, also a possible air/fuel issue since you can smell fuel when its running. Engine has a hard miss.

Diagnosis: Can be fixed.

I'm relived to hear that. Less money. I am gonna go ahead and get this fixed and while its apart, replace whatever needs replacing. Any gaskets, seals, parts, anything. I was ready to dump $1k, so I think it would be a good time to really tune the engine up good. Not gonna dump $1k into it, but maybe $500 or so.

Honestly, I don't really have the motivation to do that right now. I would like to, but right now I am simply concerned with getting the car up and running. We are down to one working vehicle, so its important that I get the car going ASAP.

I completely understand man. Do what you have to.

And btw, if your rocker arm is messing up, and a port is not opening correctly, that will adjust AFR and make different readings.

Turns out it was a bad spark plug hole. It was not tightening down and thus the compression on that cly was really bad.

Gonna did that and change the lower intake gasket.

I'm still kinda concerned about the 90 psi reading I got however. Might ask him to do a test and see if I was doing it wrong.
