Bad rack and pinon?

I have a knocking noise when I wiggle my steering wheel. Both outer tie rods are in good shape, one of them was just replaced. I thought it might be an inner tie rod but when I pulled the dust boot off and had someone wiggle the steering wheel I saw that the part of the rack and pinion that the inner tie rod bolts on to was moving up and down. I've never dealt with a rack and pinion problems before. Does the whole thing need to be replaced or is it re-buildable? Thanks

Rebuilt rack and pinion assemblies are available or some parts are available.

Rock auto is one place to buy one.

thia is what it sounds like:

The only thing I see is when turning the wheel back and forth, the shaft that the inner tie rod is screwed on to moves up and down. I think it is bad but just trying to see if anyone has had a similer experience before I replace it?

I don't think that much movement is normal.

I looked in the Ford shop manual but it doesn't show anything about the internal parts
of the rack and pinion. It says to install a rebuilt one if it has a problem. Ford has them for about $250 or aftermarket is $100-$150 (from Rock auto).
