What did the car do to make you think it was the fuel pump?

Before you replaced the pump and you were trying to start it, is it possible you ran down your battery?

would the engine turn even if i had no spark or does the engine have to move for it to make spark

I think p1000 just means the computer doesn't have enough drive cycles.

Not having spark won't keep the engine from turning, but it won't have spark unless it is turning. It gets signals off the ring on the harmonic damper etc.

If the engine turns OK with a wrench and the starter spins but doesn't turn the engine
there must be something wrong with the starter or ring gear. When the starter engages
the drive end moves out to engage the ring gear. The drive part of the starter could be bad. Possibly the starter isn't installed right so it doesn't line up right with the ring gear?

That's all I can think of.

maybe check the spindle on the starter, make sure it does spin so freely that when it engages instead of kicking the engine up it just spins itself

The battery cables getting hot is because the starter is drawing too much current. Either it's a bad starter or the engine isn't turning freely.

OP says new starter... new or reman.? If warrantied I'd get another, I'd hope for that over the engine being the issue.
