Starter Issue

So whenever I have to start my car in the morning, I feel that I have to keep the in the ignition position for an extra couple of seconds. It feels almost as if the car doesn't want to start, but it actually starts. This problem dosent happen after driving the car for a while, parking it for an hour or so, then driving it again. Only if I keep it off for few hours or overnight. My battery tested fine... Any ideas?

Act like your car doesnt start at all. Check the usual things that are checked when your car doesnt start.

Battery
Alternator
Starter
Spark plugs
Spark plug wires
Fuel system
etc.

Go one by one until you find a culprit, and fix it.

Seafoam didn't help. From Cricket's list, I am only missing the starter, how can I test the starter?

Take it out and look at the teeth. If they are worn...thats your culprit more than likely.

If it was the starter, wouldnt it happen everytime and continue to get worse? I had this happen and it ended up being the fuel filter. I didnt change it myself cuz you need some special tool I didnt want to buy. Plus, Im good at F*^&$ things up like that. The mechanic I used charged me $30 to put in a new one. Then he told me to stop using BP gas because they put too many additives in the fuel and it can cause the filter to clog... I think he's full of BS. Too many people use BP and I think it may contribute but I dont think its the whole cause.

If not, my money is on the alternator. When did you check your battery? After it sat all night or after it has been running? If your bat is not holding charge and the alternator is not producing well, this could be it too. Check the battery at different times.

Starters are weird like that. I have seen some where it will do it all the time, and some where it wont. I'm leanin more towards fuel, but I'm not taking any of the options out. I just want him to go through it one by one.

Cool. You know your right. I cant remember which one it was ( starter or alternator) that hapened in my VW years ago. I could be wrong but, I remember someone saying at the beginning of the problem, it depends where the "brushes" are at and how many are bad. Maybe that was the alternator...IDK...

Starter Solenoid. Sluggish starts are usually caused but a pitted contact disk in the solenoid its self, i just did one on a 2.2 cavi yesterday. Stupid assholes at NAPA gave me the wrong solenoid..... but rather then take it back i gutted the new one threw the guts in the cavi solenoid and off My co worker went.

wouldn't that 'cause the symptoms to appear every time the car is being started? The fact that it is happening only after the car has been sitting for long is making me suspect fuel pressure...

see thats the funny thing the solenoid disk rotates in the housing so if it rests on an area thats not to badly pitted then the next start will be issue free.

Interesting... But still, I am sure it doesn't decide to rest on the bad side in the night and the good side in the day (even though many parts in my car have peculiar personalities).

any how, I will change the fuel filter, if that doesn't work out, the switch is next!
