Some modding questions from a total newb - 2002 mustang v6

Hi all, I got a few questions, I'm completely new to modding and cars for the most part other than knowing how to drive them.

I have a 2002 V6 Automatic Transmission Mustang (completely stock) and currently reside in the DC area. I'm want to find out more about CAI's and about the "Rear End" mod posted in this thread http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...ns-vt2791.html

I have tried reading a little but its going over my head at the moment.

About CAI's:
I want to get one installed but I want to still use the old Paper air filters. Is this feasible and if so, which CAI should I get and from where? I'm sure I dont want the cloth filters. Any idea as to the cost as well?

About the "Rear End" mod:
Could someone walk me through what I need to do and where exactly to get the parts etc and what it will cost? Also, which shop and where should I go to get it installed? Also, the tuner for the speedometer, where do I get that and what will that cost?

Cost is really an issue for me so I want to know the 'total' cost of these 2 mods individually including labor. I also want to know which shop to get this done at.

Thanks for the help in advance!

there is no point of putting the cia on if your going to use the paper filter. if you free it up with the bigger tubes and stuff and then choke it with the paper filter......not good. get a k&n and itll make a helluva lot more diff than the paper filter. as for the gears, ill leave that to soemone who have done them before!!! good luck

not sure about the filters, but the ones the kits usually come with perform well compared to stock. K&N or "green" filters are two i have heard of that are good, but whatever comes with the kits you can buy are similar.

cais you can find on ebay for 40$ or spend 100-200 on a good name brand. you will see countless debates about whats better, but in the end, its all a matter of a few hp (the difference, if any, between an Ebay cai and a 200$ cai is not going to be THAT much.... as it is, they only add a few hp at most anyhow).

as far as gears, you can shop around for prices but expect to pay about 200 for the gears themselves. you will probably want to consider getting a new difrferential (limited slip type most probably) as well since the added accelleration is going to make it harder to get traction especially on slick roads - the new differential will keep you from performing the infamous "one wheel peels" by making sure that both wheels are always receiving power. that can also cost about 200 but its worth it.

the general concensus is that installing these (gears) is something better left to a pro since there are a lot of subtle knacks and skills you need to be expereinced at in order to make sure the installation is quality.
that can cost anywhere from 200-400 or more, but that all depends on the shop.
since you have the auto youll need a tuner computer like you said. i have the sct xcal2 myself. so does AtlanticBlue99 - we both like it a lot since you can customize a lot of the options yourself. youll want to make sure you get it from a good tuner (when you buy it usually they will preload some tunes for you, so you want to make sure they come from someone who knows what they are doing... mine was tuned for example, by justin from VMPtuning.com)
that costs in the area of 400$ but you can find cheaper deals.

feel free to ask more questions about this stuff

I think that the CAI ssue has been beaten to death now, but suffice it to say, a paper filter will be far more restricive than the metal fiber reusable filters that come with the kits. As for the gear issue, you can get a deal at rpmoutlet.com that is one of their dyno-tuned options for the V6 that includes your coice of either 4.10 or 3.73 gears and Trac-Lok differential for around $355.00. You can also add the rear end girdle for an extra $129.00. Since you have an automatic, I would recommend the 4.10 and have a professional install it unless you have had previous experience. Rpmoutlet.com also puts out another dynotuned option that includes underdrive pulleys, belt, and SCT XCalibrator Strategy Flash tuner for $499.00. The tuner is the next hiher than the XC2 and already comes preloaded with numerous tuning options. Altogether, that would beyour best deal for a tuner as they normally run $400.00 for the tuner alone. I hope that tis has helped you out and I can tell you that the SF is very user friendly and has produced a very dramatic result with my 3.9L.

Forget the CAI and just get a K&N filter.

For the Gears, I have an FRPP Trac Lok Differential and FRPP 4.10:1 ring and pinion gears. Read this article to learn more. I got my gears and differential with an installation kit from an ebay seller named Driveline Specialists for $379.99 and installed for $200.00 at a local race shop. The gears shaved 1/2 second off of my 1/4 mile e.t. and the CAI only added looks.

What year GT can you beat?

All v6 Mustangs come stock with cast iron short tube headers that weigh more than and restrict flow more than long tube headers.

I have many more mods than you and run high 14's in the 1/4 on the same motor as you, and I run with 99-04 GT's and can beat pre-99 stock GT's
