U Joint

How much will it cost to buy a new one? I'm pretty sure it's the U Joint. The whole car shakes when I slow down.

Shakes when you press the brake pedal or when you left off the gas pedal? Cause shaking while braking is warped rotors.

I paid about $20.00 each. Installed myself So I don't know what labor would cost.

U joint are one of the hardest pieces to install on a car. ive done a handful and always have a problem getting the last cup seated.

You should only be charged an hour of labor max for a u joint. Less if you take the shaft off yourself and bring it to them.

Yeah u-joints are a PITA to replace. But i dont think they would cause shaking, they do more of a clanking sound on slow downs and speed ups when worn. Just like Fink said, its most likely your rotors (had the same issue), take them to get re-surfaced, and new brake pads while your add it.

u joint

U joint will make a cluck noise if they are gone ,they make a clunk noise when you go from park to reverse and also maybe reverse to drive ,vibrating on breaking does not seem like a u joint problem to me, usually you get a vibration when driving along,a good quality u join will cost around 40-50$ dont get a low cost u joint as they are a very important part as they are attached to your driveshaft. If you do not hear a clunk noise and it only vibrates under breaking it is probably your rotors

Yeah, when I slow down (pressing the brakes) the car shakes. Also when I switch from Park to Drive or Park to Reverse I hear the clank noise.

How much is labor rates in your area?

At my shop it would cost you $200 just on labor + another 100-150 for parts.

That is all pretty cheap if you do the work yourself.
Here is a go-by for the u-joint:

How to Change the Universal Joint in a Mustang | eHow.com

and for the rotors i'm too lazy too search so:
loosen wheel lugs
jack up car
place jack stand
remove wheel and lug nuts
Remove two banjo bolts
Take off caliper
(good time to replace pads while you are in here, but skipping those steps for now)
DON'T let caliper hang!
Remove caliper bracket bolts
Remove caliper bracket
Pull off rotor. (may need a slight tap with a rubber hammer)
Clean new rotor of all grease
Put on new rotor.
From there take the caliper, take out the brakes, use a c-clamp or a brake tool to put in the piston, put the old pads back in. (good idea to re-grease them)
Put caliper bracket back on
Put caliper back on and grease the banjo bolts
Put wheel back on
Drive off the jackstand while doing one wheeled burnouts in your grandmothers garage.
Don't forget to hit the cat.

If you can remove the axle yourself and have the joint pressed it could be done for under $100.

A vise (or even a C-clamp) and three sockets is all it takes to swap out a U-Joint. I definitely wouldn't call it one of the hardest pieces to install on a car.

The axles don't have U-Joints...the driveshaft does.

Getting the cups seated properly so you can install the snap rings is the hardest part of the install.
