Changed headgasket, now check engine light and barely runs.
Fired it up last night for the 1st time and it didn't wanna run unless I floored it and the check engine light is on. I think I hooked all the wires back up correctly. How do I go about checking for the codes? Jumper wire and a test light right? Where do I hook it up and get the codes? I'm guessing I count the flashes but does it flash a few times, count, flash a few more and count those? Or does it just flash a few and I'm suppose to get my codes from that? I dunno. Help please. My g/f is gonna kill me if I don't have her car running soon. Thanks.
P.S. Dunno if it helps at all but it feels like it has a really bad miss. Plugs are set to .054 and the firing order is correct. It pops a bit when hitting the gas and takes a minute to go up in rpm. If I let off the gas the car dies. |

The firing order is correct I know.
3 6 (motor) 2 5 1 4 123 (coilpack) 564 I'd also have to take it 15 miles to get to anywhere that'll read the codes and the car won't even run unless the rpm's are above 3k. So driving it isn't an option. Dang it. |

It's a 94. I got a pic of that firing order off of here somewhere. Even tried swapping plugs 1 and 2 and that didn't help any. All the other wires seemed to go where they're suppose to go. I think. I would be happy as hell if it were just a firing order problem. Is that the right firing order for a 94? I don't have a book. Thanks.

That's the way I have the firing order setup. New plugs. Anyway to test the coil? It ran fine before I did the headgasket. It was just leaking water into the motor. Not to say the coil isn't bad but need to figure out a way to test it or get the codes....or both.

Sure sounds like something not connected properly.
The factory shop manual has lots of pictures and might help. You can get it from Helm. |

Don't have a manual right now at the moment and kinda tight on the cash. Trying not to spend the money if I can get some great help from you guys at the moment, and then get a manual later. Does anyone know how to get the codes? That'd be really helpful. Thanks.

K well I may have found the problem. I'll post an update though.
Went outside and figured I'd start tearing back into it to check all the wiring. Can't check much with the intake manifold on it though so I took it off and quickly found that the wiring harness was pinched at the back of the upper and lower manifold. So I'm sure there was a big air leak there. I tore apart the harness to check and make sure it was okay. 3 wires were flattened but think they're okay. Taped it back up and I'll try and put it back together tomorrow and go from there. Post an update as soon as I can. Quick question though. If I bought a Tweecer for my Mustang (88, V8 of course), does anyone know if it'll work on the 94 3.8 liter as well? Thanks for the help guys. |

Even though you have a 94, your computer is still OBII and can be read at AutoZone. The connector is right of the gas peddle.

Guess I'll have to look and see if there's an OBD-II port and solve that debate.
Anyway, I got the car running today. Guess the wiring harness being crimped between the upper and lower manifolds wasn't doing too much for it wanting to run that great. But it still has a check engine light. Now there's a pipe that comes off the upper manifold, wraps around behind the manifold, and goes into the right valve cover. This pipe has a small fitting on it that has a vacuum hose coming off of it and goes to some round thing. Anyway, that vacuum hose is cracked and I could hear it leaking pretty good. Was loud enough that at 1st I thought maybe an injecter was leaking and spraying everywhere. But it was the vacuum hose. Guessing it'd set off the check engine light. I'll have to get another vacuum hose to replace it and then go from there. Post an update as soon as I get that done. |
