stopped asking and finally did it
Ive been debating and researching the whole thermal wrap thing. Ive seen some "mixed" opinions and facts.
For some time, Ive noticed the V-6 is weak when it gets hot. I decided I didnt want to take the risk of melting my headers prematurly so I didnt wrap them. (if this doesnt help, i will consider getting some ceramic ones) I did wrap my FIPK and the box, and the plug wires to this point. I will finish it off and do the fuel lines this weekend. Sprayed everything real good with the silicone spray. I'll post back on this in a week or so with results...

If anything, this kind of stuff is fun to me. Its "cheap" alterations that may have a good result. When I was looking online for thermal wrap, I found an "intake cover" that was coated in a metal like fabric that cost $60! Someone else must see a need for this too. I have to say, I never had any issues up North with the short summers and all. Down here its different. Ive tried all kinds of "backyard" engineering with this car. Some of it has worked well, some of it has been a bust.
So, my wife drove the car today. 93 degrees outside with "Florida high" humidity. She drives 18 miles in stop and go city traffic at 5:00 to get home. When she gets here, I tell her to pull in the garage and leave the engine on. I popped the hood and put my hand in the box. To my amazement it was the SAME temperatue as the garage air. KICK ASS! ITS WORKING! She said she had NO loss of power and she had the A/C full blast all the way home. Here's where it gets weird. I turned the motor off and lift the hood up. Within 2 minutes, the front of the FIPK (its the front of the filter and is an aluminum disk about 5 inches in diameter) is so hot I cant touch it! This was with the engine off. The only thing I can think is that the wrap kept any engine heat from disipating on the intake tube. All the heat in the block was spilling back down the intake the minute there was no airflow going towards the engine. Thats what heated it up so high. Again, only after the engine was stopped. Still havent wrapped the fuel lines. I will get to that tomorrow I think. But as crazy as this sounds, the results from today are promissing. No hesitation... If this does continue to work well, my next hillbilly step is to cut a small hole in the black plastic behind the tire to let more air exchange in the fenderwell. I'll chop like a 3 inch square and throw some screen on the inside to keep crap out. It will be at the top so nobody will ever see it. It might help get a little more air in there. Who knows. |

yea, why not, I dont give a shit! I'll get some later. It might give you a good laugh seeing it all "bandaged up". I dont care what it looks like because under my hood is not a fashion show. I simply want it to stop hesitating, which has seemed to stop so far.
