ideas to help me mod
Hello every one i am a new member just joined this morning so this is whats up. i have just bought a 98 Mustang 3.8l v6 totally stock 5G. I want to beef this car up some. my ideas so far is to Chip it, short ram or cold air intake (opinions on both would be good) Cat back exhaust, larger fuel injectors(ijust moved and i was working on a 65 mustang w/ a 302) so im not to familiar with fuel injected systems. and a turbo or supercharger (opinions on thos would be great to) + anything else that would be agood idea. remember simple upgrades i could do myself and preferably cheap i know that if you need it good then the cost goes up Thanks guys and gals

Actually....
if you DO go with the split port swap, be VERY VERY sure to get the supercharger kit for the 99-04 3.8...... and when supercharging, the HP gains are not as readily apparent from the swap as they would be under normal aspiration... And.. does anyone know where to purchase the Split Port swap kit anymore?? RPM doesn't seem to have it anymore on his website.... |

the 98 and earlier 3.8 V6's are what is called "single port" motors, meaning the intake/cylinder heads have 1 air passage in them, or 1 port. the 99 and newer V6's are Dual Port. They have a low rpm passage/port and a high rpm passage/port. This was done in order to increase throttle response along with horsepower/torque at low to medium RPM's and to increase the horsepower gains at high rpm's. One of the biggest horsepower gains for a 94-98 mustang can be gotten by simply doing the changeover to a split port head/intake system. It actually gives our motor a bit more of a punch than the 99 & newer because we have a slightly more aggresive cam in our motors... (like a 1 to 3 hp gain over the stock 99+) HOwever, this mod is not for the newb mechanic unless you purchase a Split port kit... If you purchase the kit, it will come with everythign you need in order to make the swap successful along with instructions. If you do NOT purchase a kit, then it becomes a bit more difficult as there are some other parts/items needed to make the changeover along with wiring harness modifications and ignition coil mounting. This is the part that makes it a bit more difficult for the newb mechanic to successfully make the changeover without a kit or directions. Just for quick power gain calculations, your motor stock is about a 150hp motor, the 99+ are about a 190hp motor... the changeover will gain you anywhere from 35-45hp.. everyone seems to have different hp gains depending on who you talk to... My friend did it to his 97 and got a 39hp boost on 1 dyno run, and the 2nd run showed a 41hp boost... average 40hp gain.. which isn't bad at all.... |

well its more like they have to sets of intake runners that dump into a single port in the head... so their is only one valve but depending on your rpm their are two different ways for the air to get to the valve

a split port is a good idea
but think... which v6 is the fastest and what kinda upper intake it has.. so surprisingly a single port turbo v6 is the fast v6 mustang known of as for now.
