DIY cylinder head porting

I was looking at www.sa-motorsports.com at their do it yourself guide to cylinder head porting and i was wondering if this is really as easy as they make it sound? Also, how would doing it yourself compare to something such as the stage 3 cylinder heads from www.moranav6racing.com as far as power is concerned?

i wouldnt know... a SC will be sitting on top....its on our cars for Trq. purposes....they car sections that are closed for better trq. and open at about 3500rpms.....for more power.....opening them for all the time use will kill low end trq........but with a SC I wont need to be worrying about low end trq....since I have boost to replace it a bit

Done several sets of heads, a basic bowl to port cleanup and gasket matching would be the equivelant of maybe a stage 1 port job... say 10-15 horsepower on a 6 banger. Honestly though anything other than that should be left to the pro's with or those companies with CNC machines. Trying to re-design a port or doing major work might hurt more than help if you don't know what your doing.

Yea ive found lots of information, and ordered all the tools i need, except i cant seem to find an upper intake manifold gasket, only the lower one. Is there an upper one, of is the upper one just the cylinder head gasket? I will probally start this project tommorow and hopefully take some pictures and let you know how its going.

Something that is easy to do: grind the edges down to exactly match the gasket. Sometimes the gasket is bigger than the hole. Simply use a permanate (<-sp?) marker and draw where the gasket goes, then use a small grinding tool to carve the holes out to match the gasket. Do not try to make the entire chamber that big, simply angle the gringing so that it runs into the original port a few inches down.
