1995 Mustang Clock issues when head lights are turned on

The clock in my 1995 mustang started acting up about two weeks ago. When I turn my head lights or park lights on, the clock display turns off. When I turn my headlights or park lights off, the clock display turns back on and displays whatever time it was when I turned my lights on. For example, if I turn my lights on at 9:00 and off at 9:15, the clock will still display 9:00 when the lights are turned off and I'm able to read the clock again. While the lights are off the clock operates as normal.

Any help how to fix this issue would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Jennifer

I'm no electronics expert on the '94-'98's, but I would guess that somehow the head/parking lights are taking away the power to the clock. Maybe there's a short somewhere?

Mine kinda does that too, and it's an '06. It doesn't completely take away power from the clock, just dims it. Even when I just turn on the turning lights. I don't believe it's always done that.

yea it has always done that lol. both my honda and mustang do it. Its just an auto dim feature. when your turning your parking lights/headlights on obviously the assumption is that its dark outside and the clock dims so its not as bright. it no longer has to compensate for the sun being bright during the day.

Good point! Sometimes it's something simple like that.

most of the time it is something thats as simple as that... but if its not that i would look into the power short somewhere like u said...also i have a system in my car and everytime i crank it up when i'm at a stop light i see my clock light along w/ the other lights dim so it could be something w/ ur alternator too!!

The dash and lights all work fine. Everything works fine expect the stupid clock just blacks out the lights are turned on and then time seems to stand still. Maybe that's not such a bad thing LOL.

This is a standard feature when u turn on ur head lights it will dim the dash lights a bit on the radio, time and heating clusters to make it easer on the eyes at night. some how your dimmer has malfunctioned or shorted and is switching the clock back light completely off

you guys aren't listening to him.
It's not just that it dims out, the time on the clock actually freezes and doesn't start going again until he turns his headlights off again.

that is fucked...I don't see how it would stop counting time if it was just the backlight that dimmed too much.

the dimmer is shorting. probably why it freezes. thats the only relative connection between the clock and the head lamps. period.

dimming is natural if your talking about the radio clock . its suppose to dim very slightly but you wont have that problem with a aftermarket radio
