Help! RPMs climbing when put into neutral.

I've had issues similar to this but today things just started acting really strange. I used to randomly have my rpm's hang when in neutral, taking extra long to go back to idle speed. After some recommendations from people, I ended up taking it into a mechanic and they cleaned out the carbon buildup in the IAC motor. Then when it continued to happen, I figured out that it only happened when I had my air conditioning on. I asked about that and people said that was normal.

Today however, no matter what mode the climate control was set to, when shifting into neutral or disengaging the clutch, the rpms will climb to about 2500 to 3000, and hang there until I go into gear, or until pretty much I come to a complete stop. This happens even if say, I'm in 4th gear at 30 mph and the rpms are at about 1200. If I go into neutral, the rpms climb as if I reved the engine. My car is a 2001 v6 with manual transmission and about 63000 miles. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Could it be the IAC motor needs to be replaced?

This might not apply to the idle speed problem, but at my last oil change I was told that my maintenance schedule suggests I get my radiator flushed and fuel injection serviced, which I have not gotten around to yet. Also I have had a Check Fuel Cap light for a few weeks which I believe is due to the lowered fuel tank pressure from the ripped filler neck gasket that I haven't gotten a chance to replace yet. About a week ago I started having a Service Engine Soon light as well, which I believe is because of the Check Fuel Cap light being on for so long. Other than that, my car hasn't had any problems that I have noticed.

Sorry to bump this, but I have had this same problem from time and time, and I was surprised that no-one had replied with an answer.

im thinking dirty sensors in the engine... clean the MAF and reset the idle sensor deali-o ...

but not sure... stick around for an answer

Isn't there a little electronically controlled motor which controls the idle on that year of car? This is obviously a shot in the dark, but the first thing I thought of when I read this was my old 89 Merc with a 5 liter in it. When I bought it that little motor was shot, and when I replaced it I haven't had a problem since.
