Throw Out Bearing

Mine is going bad, and has been for..I guess a while. So I have been looking at the SPEC Clutch kits on American Muscle, do those include new throw out bearings? They mention bearings, and so I'm assuming those are the same, but I want to make sure.

And since that is money that I didn't really want to spend right away, how do I take care of the bearings? What are some things during driving that are specifically hard on it?

Haha, half a horse.. Don't the aluminum ones wear out faster than the others? Steel, I think? Would it be worth the half a horse? haha

My friend today said that throw out bearings can be bought and installed around a hundred dollars total. I guess it comes down to..should I buy the clutch kit at all? I know the bearing needs changed, it is the loudest thing on my car, and it pisses me off. But how do I know if my clutch is going bad?

how many miles??

you will know it will slip bad and you can sometimes smell it when you peel out... which isn't a good idea... its hard on the car...

but you can feel that the clutch is easier to push in then it used to be... and it just doesn't hook as well as it should... usually going up a hill if you are at a stop and you let the clutch out you can feel it...

if you don't feel anything different from when you first got it then your clutch is still good... also its a good idea to change it atleast ever 100k miles... in not sooner...

I would LOVE to know what shop he goes to that will drop your tranny, put a new to bearing in, and put the tranny back in for 100.00. i think he meant to say that it would cost around 400-500 for that. no ones going to do it for 100

He really knows a lot about cars, and it is rare that he is wrong.

He said the bearing itself wouldn't cost much more than forty, and I could get it installed for like 50.

I really..really..don't want to have to pay a lot for this stupid bearing.

He also says that Mustangs are rather notorious for the TO bearing issue. Is that true? How often do these usually need replaced? How do I keep it intact?

He may know a lot about cars....but NO shop is going to drop your tranny, put a new T/O bearing in, and put the tranny back up for $50.00. It just wont happen. And yes, mustangs are known for the t/o bearing going.

my throw out bearing went bad on my car when i got it...no more than 3 weeks after i got it. We went back to the dealership and bitched. They put in a new clutch..sposibly resurfaced the flywheel but i dont think so bc my flywheel is all fucked up and yeah. But we only had to pay half of what it was and we paid around 500?

Holy.

Why is this such a problem for Mustangs? And..wow..simply phenomenal. I really do NOT want to pay that much to fix some stupid bearing that is going to just go out after I replace it anyway..

I have like 67,000 miles on the car, bought it at around 48,000, I'm not sure if it was happening back then though.

It seems louder than it used to. And..I really want to get it fixed, but that is so much more money than I can spare right now..

How are you positive that it is your throw out bearing? does it squeak when your foot is off of the clutch and go away when it depress the clutch?

When my foot is off of the clutch, there is a distinct ticking noise. Like a clock, just sped up and loud :-p. When I push in the clutch, the noise vanishes. When I lightly press it, sometimes the squeaking becomes higher pitched until fully pressed in.

yeah, that would be a t/o bearing. You know...if your poor, you can get a t/o bearing for about 20-40.00 and do it yourself. Its only 5 bolts that holds the tranny to the bellhousing. its not that hard of a job. here are quick instructions.....

Remove ''y'' pipe. It will prevent the tranny for being able to be dropped.

Disconnect drive shaft. (all you need for this is a 15mm wrench).

Get car jack and drop tranny onto car jack.

While you got the tranny out, instead of just replacing the t/o bearing, replace the whole clutch. You can get a pretty decent kit for 150.00. it will be a good learning experience for you. For a NOOB, it should take you about 7-10 hours.

use a clutch alingment tool when putting the trans back in...also remember to have someone hit the clutch when inserting the trans...then when you think its in have the release it and make sure its flushed...then put the bolts in all the holes by hand to keep it up tighten....then the brace...then driveshaft tighten up....exhaust blah blah.....i took my trans out the 1st time in 40min...i just held the trans up myself...didnt need to have something catch it

All of the clutch kits I am finding are above 200 dollars. Could someone point me in the 150 direction he is talking about?

Thanks everyone for all of your help
